Yvette Nicole Brown is the American actress who voices the Sea Goddess Ursula on ABC's Once Upon a Time


Yvette Nicole Brown was born on August 12, 1971[1] in East Cleveland and was raised in the city of Warrensville Heights.[2] She attended Warrensville Heights High School and is a graduate of the University of Akron. Yvette began a career in television acting in 2000, appearing in episodes of Malcolm in the Middle, House, That '70s Show, 7th Heaven, Girlfriends, Two and a Half Men, Entourage, Rules of Engagement and Curb Your Enthusiasm. Her first regular role on a prime-time network series was Eartha Cleveland on The Big House, a 2004 ABC comedy that lasted only six episodes. That year also marked the beginning of her run as Helen on Nickelodeon’s Drake & Josh series. Her films include singing sensation drama Dreamgirls, children's comedy Hotel for Dogs, romance-comedy-drama (500) Days of Summer and the action packed Repo Men.[2] She is known for her long term role on NBC's Community as single mother and college attendee Shirley Bennett.


  • Earned her first television role, a two-episode appearance on Girlfriends, after sending the show's casting director a postcard.[1]

  • She portrayed Goldie Locksley on the Once Upon a Time Season Two DVD extra Good Morning Storybrooke.
  • Was given the role of Ursula as a gift from the creators for being a fan of the show.[4]
  • Was signed as a teen to Motown Records as part of the East Coast Family group, which included Boyz II Men. She performed on the mildly successful single "1-4-All-4-1" from the album The East Coast Family, Vol. 1.[1]
  • Hosted the Once Upon a Time San Diego Comic Con panel from 2014 to 2017.
