The Wolves are a group of characters on ABC's Once Upon a Time. They first appear in the first episode of the first season.
History
During one day in the Enchanted Forest, the wolf accompanies a human Huntsman, who kills a deer to feed both of them. Later that night, the Huntsman takes the wolf with him into a tavern, where patrons stare curiously at the pair. A few gossip about rumors that the Huntsman was raised by wolves and that he sheds tears over his animal kills. When one man sneeringly asks the Huntsman why he cries, the latter curtly states that honorable men cry because animals are pure of heart and not selfish and self-serving. In defense of the Huntsman, the wolf growls threateningly at the aggressor. Several tavern men to take offense to the beast and begin a fight with the Huntsman, who swiftly overpowers them, forcing them into retreating. From her castle's mirror, the Queen spies on the Huntsman. Impressed with his fighting skills, she deems him worthy of a task she needs help with. ("The Heart Is a Lonely Hunter")
On her drive out of Storybrooke, Emma notices Henry left his storybook on the car seat. When she looks back up, a stray wolf on the road causes her to swerve the car, hit the town marker and fall unconscious. She wakes up in a jail cell. When the sheriff, Graham, arrives, Emma alleges a wolf in the middle of the road distracted her, though Graham bets she was drunk on Regina's apple cider. ("Pilot")
In Storybrooke, after Sheriff Graham begins having recollections of his past life as the Huntsman, a wolf appears before him. Sheriff Graham becomes fixated on finding his heart and strongly believes it's not in his chest. Sheriff's deputy He prattles to Emma about needing to find his heart by following a wolf. It all sounds insane to Emma until she actually sees a wolf behind Graham. They chase it to the cemetery where he recognizes a vault from Henry's storybook. However, despite the wolf guiding them to the correct location, they are unable to locate the heart. ("The Heart Is a Lonely Hunter")
Emma and Regina leave Storybrooke in search of Maleficent's lost daughter Lily. Upon learning that Lily is dead, the two head back to Storybrooke, but on the road, Emma swerves the car after seeing a wolf in the road. With a feeling of deja vu, as the same thing happened to her the night she tried leaving Storybrooke for the first time, Emma wonders if fate is pointing her to something as she notices a sign for a diner. Upon entering the diner, Emma finds Lily alive and working as a waitress. ("Lily")
