We Are Both is the second episode of Season Two of ABC's Once Upon a Time. It is the twenty-fourth episode of the series overall, and premiered on October 7, 2012.

Synopsis

In the Fairy-tale World

During a horse ride, the young Regina is prevented from leaving the area by her mother Cora, thanks to a tree that she placed a spell on. It appears that Cora wants to make sure that Regina goes through with the wedding to King Leopold, but Regina, still upset over what happened to Daniel after Cora killed him, tells her mother that she wants to be free of her. After having a daydream that she told Snow White about Cora corrupting young souls, Regina tells her father Henry that she is becoming more like Cora, but he thinks its cold feet. He then explain to Regina about Cora's past, in which she met a person before Henry came into the picture that gave Cora a book of spells. Later that night, Regina takes the book from Cora's room and after opening it, she reads a passage that summons Rumpelstiltskin, the book's owner. It turns out that he has been waiting for some time to meet his future adversary. When Regina asks him about how to deal with Cora, Rumpelstiltskin gives her a present, which happens to be looking glass that acts as a portal to another world.

On the day of the wedding, Regina gives Cora the glass as a gift but did not tell her where it came from. But when she attempted to push Cora into it, it did not work and told Regina that it is not easy to get rid of her, only to actually work the second time and it sucks Cora into the glass after Regina succeeds on the second try. The glass then breaks into shattered pieces. Now that she was free of Cora, Regina decided to flee, only to have Rumpelstiltskin stop her and ask if she loved using magic. Regina said yes and Rumpelstiltskin offered his services to help her, only on the condition that she will owe him a favor.

In Storybrooke

At the city limits, The Dwarfs, lead by Grumpy, are at the line of the city border. They pick straws to see who will be the first dwarf who will cross it, and Sneezy is the unfortunate winner, as he becomes the first victim of what happens when residents leave Storybrooke, as he loses his memory of his fairy-tale life and become a normal person named Tom. Meanwhile, as the residents are trying to clean up from the wraith, Marco is putting signs up hoping to find Pinocchio. At the same time David goes to Regina’s house to demand answers about Jefferson's hat and how to get Emma and Mary Margaret back, but Regina pretends that she does not know how but said she was more concerned about Henry. David later goes to see Henry, who is surrounded by the residents asking about why they are stuck in this world. When David asks Mother Superior/The Blue Fairy if there is a tree that can send them back, she tells David that there is no fairy dust to make it work. The Dwarfs return in a panic and detail what happened to Sneezy after he crossed the city limits, causing the displaced characters to also panic. David tells the citizens to meet back in 2 hours and he'll have a plan.

Later on Regina, whose magic is not as powerful as it was, was confronted by Archie, who wanted to talk to her, but she did not even though she sensed what it was already. She then visits Mr. Gold for a favor, which is to win back Henry. Although Mr. Gold refuses to help Regina regain her full powers, he does give her a book and notes that she has become more like her mother, Cora. Regina then uses the book to come up with a plan of her own. As David practices his speech to deliver to Storybrooke, Henry noticed the hat and tells his grandfather that it belonged to Jefferson. While David felt guilty for losing Snow and Emma, he tells Henry that he will do whatever it takes to find them. So he also stops by Mr. Gold's shop to ask if he can find someone. Mr. Gold gives David a potion that will help on the condition that he stayed out the way. Unfortunately, moments after David told Mr. Gold about no one can leave Storybrooke, Mr. Gold smashes everything in the shop now that he realizes he won't be able to leave either.

At the town hall, the residents are surprised to see Regina show up instead of David as she unleashed her restored powers, only to be stopped by Henry, who agrees to go with her, only to become more of a prisoner than her adopted son. Across town, David tries the potion on the hat, only to land on a overturned car and finds Jefferson, who tells David that he can't help him but notes that if the Enchanted Forest exists, he would. However, moments after Jefferson began to chanting and starts taking off, David chases after him, only to be stopped by Ruby, who told him about Regina taking Henry, but when he discovers that the citizens are trying to leave, David drives in front of everyone and tells them they will lose their memories of their lives and that of their loved ones. David also tells them he wants to be David and the Prince and does not want to lose either, added that the people who have the choice to stay in Storybrooke is open to them. He then tells the residents that they will find a way to defeat Regina but will have to do it together. The citizens are moved by the speech and return to Storybrooke. David then heads over to the Mayor's home with his sword, only to see Regina give up and tells David to take Henry home, claiming that she wants to really change, and tells David that the Enchanted Forest does exist. She then takes the spell book and before she throws it in the fireplace she holds on to it for safe keeping.

At the diner, after Henry tells Marco where to find Pinocchio (who has disappeared), David tells Henry that he believes that Emma and Mary Margaret are out there in the Enchanted Forest and he can feel their presence.

In the Post-Fairy-tale World

Hours after waking up from being thrown into the Enchanted Forest by the Wraith and is captured by Mulan and Aurora, Emma and Mary Margaret are tied and walking behind Mulan, who is on a horse. After reaching a camp that is home to the refugees of the curse, Mary Margaret notices that it is like the refugees back in Storybrooke. The moment gives Emma and Mary Margaret the opportunity to escape, only to have Mulan throws something at Mary Margaret, who falls down flat on her face and passes out. Emma stops running to help her mother but Mulan tells the refugees to take them to the pit. Moments later Emma tries to wake Mary Margaret up and she hears a voice asking if she can help walks in. When Emma asks who she is, she replies, a friend. Who happens to be Regina’s mother, Cora.

Trivia

• The title card features tree branches.
• The "looking glass" that Rumplestiltskin gave to Regina is an allusion to the story Alice in Wonderland's sequel, Through the Looking Glass, and What Alice Found There, which has the ability to send people to Wonderland.
  • Futhermore Wonderland is cited as annoying and useless by Jefferson.
• This is the first episode with less Emma and Mary Margaret scenes: they appear only for a minute.
• It's the first episode of the second season in which August, Henry (Regina's Father), Cora and Jefferson appear.
• It's confirmed that anyone can learn to use magic by someone who already knows it.
