Moana is based on the character of the same name from the Disney film of the same name.
Moana lives on the island of Motunui with her father Tui, mother Sina, and maternal grandmother Tala, the latter being the island's chief. Despite the island's strict rules about going out too far into the ocean, Moana is obsessed with the water. One day, while her father is out with the other men fishing, Moana sneaks out for a swim; however, she is caught by Tui and Tala, both of whom seem shocked rather than angry, confusing Moana. Eventually, Tala reveals the truth: the reason no one is allowed to leave the island is that it is surrounded by a protection spell; however, Moana has just accidentally demonstrated that she is mysteriously able to pass through it. Tala believes this means she has been chosen by the goddess Te Fiti to find Maui, who is destined to break the protection spell with his magic Fish Hook; however, Tui and Sina are hesitant to allow their young daughter to go on such a dangerous mission. With encouragement from her grandmother, however, Moana decides to leave without them knowing. ("The Quiet Voice")
In Storybrooke, Moana is known as Lana and is a student of Storybrooke Schools. One day, during lunch, she is approached by a younger student named Lucy, who begins asking her about her past life, including which Dark Curse brought her to Storybrooke, but Lana is confused by most of her questions and put off by her aggression in asking them, quickly excusing herself from the conversation. The following day, Lucy makes a second attempt, this time not letting her excitement make her too hyper, and Lana agrees to spend time with her if she promises to keep everything a secret. When Lucy agrees, Lana introduces herself as Moana. ("The Quiet Voice")
