It's now enchanted.
Poseidon using his trident to enchant a seashell src

Tridents are magical items featured on ABC's Once Upon a Time. They first appear in the twelfth episode of the first season.[1]

The most prominent trident, Poseidon's trident, is based on the item of the same name from Greek Mythology, and King Triton's trident from the Disney film The Little Mermaid.

History

Before First Curse

The sea god Poseidon discovers that Hook, captain of the Jolly Roger, has agreed to take Poseidon's daughter Ursula to Glowerhaven. He offers the pirate squid ink, which the pirate can use to give retribution to the Dark One. In return for this much-needed item, the sea king uses his trident to enchant a seashell and asks him to trap his daughter's voice within it so she won't leave the kingdom for Glowerhaven. Learning about her father's scheme from Hook, she helps by stealing the ink from Poseidon's vault for him. Unfortunately, their plans are thwarted when Poseidon shows up at the Jolly Roger and takes away the ink with a wave of his trident. This incites an angry Hook to reach for his sword; however, Poseidon uses his trident to freeze the pirate in place. Angered that his only hope of revenge is gone, Hook spitefully captures Ursula's singing voice in the shell so Poseidon can never sink another ship again.

Ursula, shattered at this betrayal, returns to the rocks by Poseidon's ocean. She decides to choose her own destiny and grabs her father’s trident. The sea god orders his daughter not to, but his angry daughter aims the weapon at him and declares to her father she no longer wants to be a mermaid. At that, she uses the trident to transform her tail into tentacles. She claims that the whole sea will be at her mercy because of her newfound power and that even her father will come to fear her. ("Poor Unfortunate Soul")
