  • Lots of people talk about their favorite "ships", but in the process forget that ship doesn't necessarily refer to romance. Once Upon a Time is a great example of that, with many familial and platonic relationships being core to the show, and while this fanbase is more inclined to discuss family relationships, some amazing friendships get left out. Many characters have great friendships, such as:

Which one is your favorite and why? Let's discuss!

(My list excluded the friendships that are most popularly shipped romantically -- basically any of Emma's, lol -- but feel free to include them if you ship them platonically. The goal of this conversation, though, is to distance ourselves from the overwhelming arguments of which romantic ship will reign supreme.)

    • I personally like Jacinda/Sabine, honestly more than I like Cinderella/Tiana (although that's largely because we've basically seen none of them). I like the "two roommates versus the world" set-up and they suit each other well, Jacinda being a realist and Sabine being a dreamer. We've had a little bit of a switch in which one is more opinionated (with Sabine encouraging Jacinda to apologize to Louie in 701, but later we see Sabine being pretty open with her thoughts about Henry and Drew in 702, 708, and 712 while Jacinda is less likely to stand up for herself in plots like 708), but they alternate well enough to never get into trouble because they're too headstrong or too easygoing, lol. Of the friendships I listed, I think it's had the most consistent amount of screentime. Snow/Ruby would be a close second, but we really only got to see it in Ruby's two backstories.

Belle and Zelena is also a lot of fun, even if we haven't seen much of it. Unlike Jacinda and Sabine, what makes them work is that they suit each other horribly and it doesn't make sense at all why they would get along, and yet they do. Belle's Disney Princess Adventures™ are always fun, but I think I like Belle/Merida best of those.

Henry and Nick/Jack sounds like it would be a good friendship -- and is one of the few male/male friendships on the show -- but we really didn't get to see enough of it for me to judge.

    • Alice and Will Scarlet. It was nice seeing emphasis put on a friendship between a man and woman rather than turning it into a love story. It was also one of the strongest dynamics in the show whereas a lot of OUaT's friendships are pretty extra and don't play too much into the overall plot.

      Snow/Red, Belle/Red, Belle/Hook, Belle/Zelena, and Jacinda/Sabine are all good too.

I also support all of Belle's princess adventure pairings, minus Anna.

ahhh I can't believe I forgot that one! Alice/Will was fantastic.

    • I really like Jacinda and Sabine, but my first favorite of the series was David and Ruby. I'm only sad that friendship was not shown much after S2. Emma and August were great too.

    • I love Elsa and Emma so much and I love that they are (presumed) platonic True Love. I also love Aladdin and Emma, or rather the potential over what we actually got. And Emma and Ruby and s1 Emma and Mary Margaret. All the Emma friendships!

I'm in the minority that prefers Captain Book over Captain Charming because of the big borther/little sister dynamic and the redemption and development, especially in season 6 (all the headcanons). I want to say Captain Cobra but I feel like that's more of a family dynamic than a friendship.

Also, Kristoff and Elsa, because I felt the movie lacked a dynamic between these two but in the show they were brilliant.

Also SWAN BOOK! Honestly their every scene in 6x09 was perfect, especially with Emma being there for Belle because she gave birth alone. Swan Book was the friendship we deserved

    • As someone who mostly is asexual (for now), I am all about friendships. :) I also believe that true friendship can rival if not match, True Love. (Can True Love's Hug be a thing?)

When Wish Hook and Rumple made peace I was all puppy dog eyes. I wish Hook could have said something to Rumple as he walked away, but I guess they both knew there was nothing to be said. Just mutual respect had been earned. Seeing that carry over to Weaver and Rogers is great. Rumple is protecting Hook and his daughter with no thanks (yet).

My favorite friendships that were: Emma and Regina. It was a hard road and reminds me of some of my own. Emma and Mary Margaret (before curse broke)  Alice and Will: I wasn't a big knave fan, but his ultimate loyalty to Alice and hers to him was great. Most season 1 friendships: There was a lot of potential flying around. Mostly because of characters like Red, Granny and the dwarfs. August and Emma: This seemed more like a brother/sister relationship. But I enjoy their scenes.

Friendships I never got into: Hook and Charming: It had it's moments, but something about it irked me. Later on it was okay.  Charming and Arthur: This one is obvious, but when they were first palling around, something seemed off. It's sad, since I'd have loved Arthur to be good and actually give Charming the brotherhood he's always longed for. Seruiously, Charming got the short end of the stick when it came to friendships, in my opinion. Male friendships all around kind of didn't get enough time. Maybe a spinoff with a male lead would have been required.

Friendships that I wish could have been: Arthur and Hook: This worked more for me. I believe Arthur's decision to stay behind and heal the Underworld touched Hook and they could have eventually become sparring buddies at least. More Disney Princess friendships: Why was this not explored more? DP is like Disney's biggest selling thing and they really only touch on the friendship between them in a show that has them interacting. The closest we got was Cinderella and Tiana. Which needs more time! Dorothy and Alice: Either version of Alice. I just really wanted these two to meet. Dorothy with her sensibility and Alice with her quirks.

      I could go on.

    • Emma and Regina, Hook and Charming, Weaver and Rogers, those are my picks.

    • I liked CaptainSwan, pre-romance

    • I loved Team Princess (Emma, Snow, Aurora and Mulan). And the Snow/Aurora/Ella crew in 4x07 because I love the idea of the 3 original princess being friends. Also Hook and Bae in the s2 finale and in 3b. And someone on Tumblr brought up the idea of a Alice and Baelfire (CuriousFire) friendship and I'm on board with it.

I wish there was a Henry and Robin friendship. Technically they are cousins after all. Archer Believer?

Damn you for putting this idea in my head. Either as a friendship or a ship it works. Curious Kansas?

    • Weaver and Rogers. I wouldn't have expected it going into S7, but their partnership has been a highlight this season.

        Preparing Editor Spell
    • Alice and Will, Emma and Mary Margaret (they were friends before being mom and daughter), Weaver and Rogers, Henry and Rogers, Jacinda and Sabine, Belle and Grumpy (that should have been given more development).

I love Henry and Violet, and I wish she would make even a small cameo in the finale. Even if they're not endgmae, I headcanon them as very good friends.

    • In light of Flower Child, Henry/Rogers officially ranks up there with Jacinda/Sabine for me. They've been kind of fun all season, but their insane theorizing really sold it to me. (Tilly fits in there somewhere but she's technically Rogers's daughter so I don't think I can count that, lol)

I also love the idea of Captain Wicked Swan Book where Emma, Killian abd Zelena all adopt Belle and protect her.

    • Also (this is going to sound nuts given my history) but I could be on board with Emma and Neal being friends post season 3 and raising Henry that way.

What does "Book" stand for? Belle? I thought Zelena and Belle was WickedBeauty.

    • I really want more friendships vs romances. Especially brotherhood. But I'm sure I'm in the minority.

Imagine if they'd began season 7 with Jack and Henry bonding over adventures and then went into the Ella story. It could have been Once's version of Supernatural, but they'd be defeating evil fairy tale characters (Blue Beard, New Rumple, Dracula, Nome King, the Forty Thieves) instead of monsters and vampires. Though we'd need some monsters and vampires to go with it. Maybe make Jack a werewolf, too, just for a twist.

I was not a big fan of Nick/Jack/Hansel but I think he truly cared about Henry and wanted to protect him and Ella and Lucy too. He had no reason to stick close to them pre-curse besides friendship. Henry was his second chance, but because he was never honest, he never got to work through his problems and find redemption/peace.

Their friendship is kind of tragic and I hope Henry at least mentions his friendship with him when he wakes up.

Not sure who Sage was, but Hilda deserved what she got. Nasty child-muncher. If he'd left Zelena alone I'm guessing he'd still be alive.

Wicked Beauty is the romantic ship, Wicked Book is the friendship.

At least that was how it was for Hook/Belle so I just thought it would apply to Belle/Zelena.

I've never once seen "Wicked Book", only ever "Wicked Beauty" (and "Captain Beauty" for Belle and Hook). There's no point in differentiating between friends and romance when they're both crackships anyway. Also "Beauty" is a lot nicer sounding than "Book".

It was more of a Tumblr tagging issue than anything else (the "Captain Book" tag was created so friendship stuff wouldn't appear in the ship tag) and it's probs just old habit.

    • I like the Swan Queen friendship. I just like friendships that first start out as rivalries before becoming good friends.

        Preparing Editor Spell
    • Love how CaptainCharming (Charming and Killian) build up on their friendship. First they didn't like each other then they started bonding. Same goes with the SwanQueen (Emma and Regina) friendship.

        Preparing Editor Spell
    • I realised a while ago that I vastly prefer Killian's friendships with women over men. The only two male friendships I like are Charmign and Henry (which are both more family than friendship, especially Henry) and sort of Robin Snr and Bae (but again, Bae is kind of more of a family-type relationship). But otherwise, give him all the lady friendships; Belle (which is my favourite Killian friendship), Ariel, Jasmine, Elsa, Snow, Ella/Ashley, Ursula. Just give him a squad of Disney princesses.

I also feel like the only Killian fan who doesn't care about his friendship with Smee aor the rest of the JR crew.

I agree with Swan Savior, enemies to friends is the best, all the development.
