  • They made the Witch of the East seem very good, but so was Zelena at a time while in the sisterhood.

Obviously she was evil in the movie, so what are your ideas?

    • I'd take it like in Oz (or its many variants) that each Cardinal Direction had a good and a bad witch. For example, there was the Good Witch of the North that met Dorothy (not Glinda which the movies get wrong), while Dorothy eventually met Mombi the Wicked Witch of the North.

For Once, it's more of "Wicked Witch" than Wicked Witch of the West being emphasized. She was granted the West, set to represent the western portion of Oz, but she became wicked and then took over all of Oz and just so happened to been given the west (which she deals very little with).

    • Baum initially went with the "East and West are wicked, North and South are good" mentality, but, when faced with writing a sequel that established the existence of Princess Ozma of Oz, he had to create Mombi, the Wicked Witch of the North, as a plot device, and then completely eschewed the "cardinal morality" system entirely.

I believe he also confirmed in that sequal or one of the others that there was in fact 4 evil witches, one for each of the cardinal directions, but Locasta (Good Witch of the North) and Glinda (Good Witch of the South) overthrew the Wicked Witches of the North and South respectivly. They Dorothy's house landed on the Wicked Witch of the East, and she killed the Wicked Witch of the West with water, so that by the end of the first book, no evil witches were left that had ruling powers over part of Oz.

    • There are good and wicked witches all over Oz, North and South and East and West. The Witch of the North and East are good witches and the Wicked Witch of the North was mentioned.

Technically Mombi was not the Witch of the north, she didn't rule the north she was just a sorceress who lived in the north

    • yeah, a book revealed there were four Wicked Witches originally until Glinda and the Witch of the North rose up and defeated two of them. Dialogue in Once  seems to suggest the reverse happened in the show: Once Zelena took out the Sisterhood, Wicked witches came out of the woodwork.
