Classy dramatic title! Here I want to discuss the direct Disney Inserts and how they have affected Once and am curious about your views on them as well. Analysis begins!
Are they taking up too many resources?
In my personal opinion, Disney insertion absorbs an inproportionate amount of resources that may spillover and help Once proper. The Disney inserts get better CGI and effects and even better and larger scale battle scenes. Who can argue that the Frozen Troll and Snowman and Brave Bear look significantly better than Gorgon, Maleficent dragon, and so on? Who can claim the 30 on 30 battle scene against Camelot and Dunbroch is equal to the 2-man army of Bo Peep and the ten men army of Black Knights or the 10-man army of King George? Who can even argue that Frozen took too much screentime from Once in season 4 and Brave getting an extra episode without fan outrage? Some good things overflow into Once, however. Brave got a brutal, bloody stabbing, so Once got it too with Emma running Hook through. So, there are positives indeed.
Are they any good?
To no surprise, I actually like the Disney insert portions. It's decent acting with better CGI and fairly static characters given better morals and better "feels". I actually think it's good and that's why I dislike it as a concept. Why can't Once be given that much effort and resources without having to do insertions? The insertions show that Once can actually do pretty cool stuff, but it's never spread evenly. That is what frustrates me the most.....well, besides...
Fan preception is skewed?
I personally love that everyone has unique desires and wishes and views. But there was an event that occured with the advent of Frozen: the influx of wanting more "Disney". I find it reasonable being started by Frozen's inclusion, but that's why I end up on the negative side of this topic. Once one thing happens, then there will be a vocal minority that wants more Disney. " I want Cinderella because that new movie." " That Ursula is nothing like the Disney version!" "That Maelficent can't hold a candle to Angelina Jolie's version." "Where's Elsa?" "Why no more Merida?" "Star Wars, STAR WARS!" And even more "I want" temper tantrums.
Yes, Disney has been a major portion of our lives, but Once isn't suppose to be cookie cutter or copy and paste. It's suppose to be twisted and bleaker, or happier and different. Once isn't about including every good Disney movie in, or the newest one. It's about a band of misfit characters finding their happiness. They might meet some interesting fellows along that way, but that's just it.
Underworld is coming and all I want is a nice balance. Their can be nods, but I wish that it is evenly treated and not lazily inserted to appease a small subset of fans. The Disney insertion hasn't actually shown any real long-term bonus to Once, so I hope it will tread lightly.
So, what are your views on the Disney insertion? What about the upcoming Underworld arc? What are you looking forward too?
