  • Well, we got an answer.

It was the beating Heart of the first Titan glamoured as a cup. (I totally accept this oly because this super confirms greek myth in Once Universe and explains why Rumple seeming has powerful magic items on display because some of them are fake.)

    • Interesting.... more Greek Mythology!

It seems a lot of people forget that the collection in Skin Deep, was just hints to future storylines. He had tons of fakes.... Poseidon's trident, Excalibur, the Holy Grail. Honestly, the only trophy that was real, was probably Hook's hand.

Actually, Robert Carlyle and a writer (maybe Jane) on the DVD for the audio commentary of Skin Deep did emphasized how the Holy Grail was THE HOLY GRAIL. That is why it was so significant for Rumple to replace such an important item to what he valued, the chipped cup in remembrance of Belle. People had to present so much evidence on twitter and Jane finally admitted that they didn't know they were going to do a storyline on the Holy Grail, basically, it was a retcon and another way they messed up their own continuity, lol.

"@JaneEspenson @mentem_mortalia @damagedhearts Carlyle emphasiezed in the Skin Deep audio commentary that it was indeed THE grail.

It is like pulling teeth to get the writers to admit their faults because basically it seems all they have to say to answer a question is "because magic" and people just eat it up. And this show really doesn't do foreshadow well when Adam and Eddy have admitted to making things up on the fly. That is why there are so many storylines not finished or characters are dropped with no explanation because they are on the next shiny toy to play with.

    • It is not a retcon, if it was never confirmed in the show. Rumplestiltskin's collection was just filled with Easter Eggs, for future storylines. That does not mean OUaT needed, Rumple to be involved with any of them. Personally, I am glad that Excalibur was originally the Holy Grail.

    • Huh? You can't have it both ways. Neither the fact that the Holy Grail was a fake and it actually was the beating Heart of the first Titan was confirmed in the show either. When talking about the context of that scene, the significance of the moment was very important in the narrative that Rumple valued a chipped cup over THE Holy Grail. Robert Carlyle and another writer confirmed what we just witnessed onscreen in the audio commentary.

Just because you liked the convoluted storyline of Excalibur was originally the Holy Grail does not negate what was established in Skin Deep in regards to that very same item. As Jane admitted, they didn't even consider doing the Holy Grail storyline beyond that moment in the Skin Deep episode. Hence, retcon. Foreshadow??? lol. The continual steady lack of continuity is laughable. I can always count on OUAT for that.

You do realize that Rumplestilskin had more than just the "Holy Grail" in his collection, right? He had "Excalibur", the "Sorcerer's Hat", "Poseidon's Trident" just to name a few. These were all just easter eggs, and not retcons.

I agree. They were easter eggs for Disney references, they were definitely not easter eggs for "planned" future sotrylines. They just took items from different Disney film and thought it would be cool to show them on screen that's it.

I agree with the concept that those items were Easter Egg so therefore it should be taken in face value. That is why I find it nonsense to go another 4 seasons later and retcon it to say it was another item which destroys the narrative of that scene and think people are naïve enough to think that true. It was cool to see it on the show but not one person thought the Holy Grail would ever be reference again because it served its purpose in that one scene.
