In "The Broken Kingdom" the Darkness attacked Lancelot as he and Guinevre entered the vault of the DO. Was this just some kind of protection spell that Rumple, or even the Darkness itself, pleaced on the vault? Or was it trully the Darkness?

We don't know but we may perhaps find out.
It could just be a magical power Rumple possessed, or it could be some of the Darkness that belonged to a former DO.
We saw in DreamCatcher that Emma could use the swilry Darkness in a spell, so, perhaps it is the same magic power that was guarding the Vault.
Or it's just something we have yet to discover.
I think it was some additional darkness, not the Dark One. Which is why they managed to send it away with fire. But yeah it was confusing, I don't know why they put that.
What additional darkness? Are you talking about the entity? If you are, why not say so? Why are you calling this being - "darkness"? What is with that?
Isn't the darkness attracted to the potential for evil? I guess that just means that Lance has more potential than Gwen, though, as they were the only two around.
