After the customer realizes he has been swindled, Malcolm is promptly beat up and the man steals all his money, while Malcolm's son, Rumplestiltskin, is watching. However, instead of looking for work and earn back the money, Malcolm later goes back to the tavern to deceive bystanders into the same card game. When Rumplestiltskin finds out, he suggests they use a magic bean to start afresh elsewhere. By tossing the bean, they open up a portal outside the tavern, and head for a mysterious place from Malcolm's dreams. Think Lovely Thoughts

Decades after he visited Neverland, Rumplestiltskin is married to a woman named Milah. One day, their son, Baelfire, is bitten by a venomous snake. Together, Milah and Rumplestiltskin visit the local tavern, where Milah shows him a dagger that she bought. She asks him to use it to kill a healer and steal an antidote for Baelfire. After her husband leaves, a man drunkenly bumps into Milah, and proceeds to harass her. A pirate, Killian Jones, intervenes, and strikes up a conversation with Milah. He talks of traveling, and even asks if she wants to see what's out there, but Milah says that she has responsibilities: her sick son and her husband. Still, before he leaves, Killian makes sure she knows the offer is there, and mentions that he is in port quite often.

Snow White charges at the Queen, who simply disappears in a puff of smoke, causing her to fall flat on the ground. The Queen warns them that they must answer before sundown of the next day, and for every day Snow White refuses, one of her loyal subjects will perish. If you want some ale, you should ask! They'll serve anyone who can pay, my friend.

Prince James to Anton src

Taverns, also known as Pubs,[4] are a series of Fairy Tale Land, New Fairy Tale Land, Wish Realm and Wonderland locations featured on ABC's Once Upon a Time and Once Upon a Time in Wonderland. They first appear in the seventh episode of the first season of Once Upon a Time.

History

Before First Curse

In Agrabah, a young man named Cyrus plays a card game while his two brothers, Taj and Rafi, watch. He wins the game by cheating, and a fight nearly breaks out between him and the other players. The bartender breaks up the fight and asks the instigators to leave, but the men vow that Cyrus will pay for what he did. The brothers then celebrate the victorious game with the remaining patrons. ("Dirty Little Secrets")

At an Enchanted Forest tavern in an unnamed town, Malcolm tricks a man into betting money on his card game. After the customer realizes he has been swindled, Malcolm is promptly beaten up by the man, who then steals all his money, while Malcolm's son, Rumplestiltskin, is watching. However, instead of looking for work to earn back the money, Malcolm later goes back to the tavern to deceive bystanders into the same card game. When Rumplestiltskin finds out, he suggests they use a magic bean to start afresh elsewhere. By tossing the bean, they open up a portal outside the tavern, and head for a mysterious place from Malcolm's dreams. ("Think Lovely Thoughts")

After her husband leaves, a man drunkenly bumps into Milah and proceeds to harass her. A pirate, Killian Jones, intervenes and strikes up a conversation with Milah. He talks about traveling and even asks if she wants to see what's out there, but Milah says that she has responsibilities: her sick son and her husband. Still, before he leaves, Killian makes sure she knows the offer is there and mentions that he is in port quite often. A few hours later, Milah comes home, only to discover that her husband chose to get the antidote by signing a contract promising the healer their second-born child. Milah is horrified, and once she is sure that their son is better, she heads back to the tavern, in the hopes she can see Killian. ("Devil's Due")

Milah and Rumplestiltskin's relationship deteriorates, and Milah begins drinking at the tavern in her spare time. She spends time with Killian and his crewmen and falls in love with him. One day, Rumplestiltskin comes to retrieve Milah from the tavern, and she tauntingly tells him to go home. However, when Baelfire, who Rumplestiltskin told to wait outside, comes in asking for his mother, Milah promptly leaves with them. ("The Crocodile")

A few years later, Rumplestiltskin is being celebrated at a tavern for killing the ogres and ending the Ogre Wars. Beowulf, who is jealous because Rumplestiltskin stole his glory, reveals that Rumplestiltskin was only able to defeat the Ogres because he's become the Dark One. Baelfire admits that he's worried about the situation, and wants his father to give up the Dark One Dagger and stop using dark magic. Rumplestiltskin promises his son to never use dark magic again. ("Ill-Boding Patterns")

William Smee, a criminal who sells stolen goods on the black market, approaches Rumplestiltskin, now known as the Dark One in a tavern and strikes a deal to trade a magic bean to him in exchange for youth. Before leaving the bar, Rumplestiltskin sees Killian enter with his crew. Believing the pirate kidnapped his wife, Milah, all those years ago, Rumplestiltskin stays to follow after them. ("The Crocodile")

Almost a century after Rumplestiltskin's meeting with William Smee, a young mermaid named Ursula, who is the daughter of Poseidon, begins singing at a tavern to earn gold for a journey to Glowerhaven. After Ursula captivates an audience with her voice, Killian, now known as Captain Hook, befriends her and offers to take her to Glowerhaven for free. On his way out of the pub, Poseidon's guards kidnap Hook for a rendezvous with the sea king himself. ("Poor Unfortunate Soul")

Jonathan, a gardener of the royal estate of Prince Leopold, frequents a tavern where a barmaid named Cora catches his eye. To woo her, he falsely presents himself as a prince and then proposes to her with a ring of straw. He promises, in two weeks' time, to return with a gold ring. Prior to his leaving, Cora offers to keep him company in his room, resulting in Cora becoming pregnant with his child. ("Bleeding Through")

Several years later, a young boy named David learns his father has a drinking problem after hearing him and his mother quarrel about it. One day, while Robert is at a tavern having a drink, King George, arrives to ask the patrons for help finding his son James, who has been kidnapped. George promises to handsomely reward those who come forward with information about his son's whereabouts but warns that those who withhold information will be punished. Realizing James is the son he once gave up, Robert makes plans to find the boy and bring him home to his birth family. Later on, Robert is murdered and his body is dumped in a ravine, however, Ruth and David receive misinformation about his death, in that he got drunk at a tavern and fell into a ravine on his journey home. ("White Out," "Murder Most Foul")

Becoming fast friends, Queen Regina and the fairy known as Tinker Bell spend time together at a tavern in the woods. Miserable with life, Regina confides in Tinker Bell about her non-existent marriage with King Leopold and playing stepmother to his daughter, Snow White, who she detests for causing her true love's death. Hoping to help Regina's circumstances, Tinker Bell offers Regina true happiness with pixie dust, which will help her find a new love. The pixie dust leads them to another tavern, where Regina sees a mysterious man with a lion tattoo. However, she runs away from him before they get the chance to meet. ("Quite a Common Fairy")

In Agrabah, the sorcerer Jafar enters a tavern and demands possession of the barman's genie. Since the request is met with refusal, he stabs the man's hands until the latter makes his final wish to keep the sorcerer from ever harming him again. Thus, Jafar snatches the genie bottle off the shelf and prepares to leave when the man calls him a bastard. Although Jafar is furious at this insult, he is unable to harm the man, so Jafar's teacher, Amara, comes in to give him punishment instead. ("The Serpent")

In Wonderland, Alice and Will, the Knave of Hearts, have a drinking contest at a tavern. Their friendship deepens when she learns about his sister, Penelope, who died young. She returns his heart, which had been taken by the Queen of Hearts, and which Alice helped him get back. ("To Catch a Thief")

Shortly afterward, Alice meets a genie named Cyrus. They spend time together at a tavern at night, where Cyrus tells her about a sorcerer, Jafar, who has been chasing after him. Despite that she is a human and he a genie, they find common ground by both having been in prisons. For Alice, her old home felt like one, while Cyrus finds the outside world a fresh stroke of freedom from his bottle. She hears more about the different lands he has been to and he presents her with a piece of magic paper in the form of an origami rose, which he came by on his travels. Alice thinks it's beautiful and is impressed that the paper actually smells like a rose. She then asks the genie to teach her swordplay. ("Trust Me")

In Nottingham in the Enchanted Forest, Robin of Locksley, a former thief, opens a tavern business with his wife, Marian. They face trouble from the Sheriff of Nottingham, who demands tax payments in two days or Robin will be jailed and their business closed. However, when the sheriff returns to collect the payment, Robin turns the tables on him, and he and his Merry Men steal the sheriff's money, before distributing it among the poor. He renames himself Robin Hood and decides to be a thief again, except to only steal from the rich for the needy. ("Heart of Gold")

In order to help her daughter Regina find love again, Cora heads into the tavern[5] that Robin Hood used to own.[6] There, she gathers intel from the Sheriff of Nottingham about Robin Hood, Regina's soulmate. However, the sheriff states that Robin Hood is not only a thief but is already married to another. Since this puts a dent in her initial plan, Cora considers the sheriff can be her daughter's potential marriage match instead. ("Mother")

Curious about humans, a giant named Anton climbs down the Beanstalk and ends up in the kingdom of King George. He watches the activities of the humans through the outside of a tavern window, and is befriended by two humans, Jack and Prince James. Jack gives him a magic mushroom to become human size, and the three of them spend time inside the tavern. Anton happily enjoys the harp music in the tavern, while Jack and James tell him about the kingdom's enormous debts. He feels sympathetic enough to try and procure some treasure from atop the beanstalk for them, but, unknown to him, they follow him up to slaughter the rest of the giants. ("Tiny")

Living a solitary existence with a wolf as his only companion, the Huntsman heads into a tavern one night. Two other customers, Bartholomew and Horatio, insult him for crying over killing a deer, but the Huntsman merely responds calmly. This angers Bartholomew, and he attacks the Huntsman, who stabs him in the neck, killing him. ("The Heart Is a Lonely Hunter")

In her village, a sixteen-year-old Red Riding Hood visits a tavern in her pursuit of the tax collector, Hershel Worthington, who is evicting her and her grandmother Widow Lucas from their home because they have unpaid debts. She meets the barmaid, Gretchen, who helps give her confidence to approach Hershel. At the bar, Hershel tells the bartender Willie about how his wife Ernestine wants nothing to do with him, and this gives Red the idea to trade her cross pendant to him, lying to him about its magical properties which can win a woman's heart.[2]

In an unnamed village, Mayor Tomkins becomes concerned for his people's safety when wolfstime occurs, while a wolf is stalking and killing people. He calls for a town meeting at the local tavern. Widow Lucas, Red and Peter attend the meeting, as does a disguised Snow White, who is staying with Red and her grandmother while hiding from the Evil Queen. Tomkins expresses regrets over the lives lost during the hunting of the wolf and vows that the slaughter will be the last massacre of their people, but Widow Lucas tries to dissuade them from going against the wolf. She tells them about how her brothers, despite being strong and grown, were all killed by a wolf in one instant. ("Red-Handed")

A pirate, Black Beard, meets Snow White at a tavern for a deal. With plans to run away from the Evil Queen, she has hopes he can take her as far as possible from the kingdom. In return for his help, she offers some money in exchange for passage on his ship, but the pirate asks her to pay up more in order to earn his discretion. Since she doesn't have enough money, Black Beard leaves without securing a deal with her. ("Snow Drifts")

Later that day, Emma and a future version of Hook go to the same tavern, where they see past Hook gambling at a table. As Emma distracts past Hook with her female wiles, future Hook boards the Jolly Roger to strike a deal with Snow White. Still in the tavern, Emma secretly stays sober while tricking past Hook into downing several drinks, but then he persuades her into leaving with him to go onto his ship for a "nightcap". ("Snow Drifts")

While spending time at the tavern with his fellow dwarves, Dreamy opens up to his brothers about having a strange feeling he can't shake. A human woman named Belle overhears the conversation, and tells Dreamy that he is lovesick. With some encouragement from Belle, Dreamy hurries off to meet the woman he has feelings for, a fairy named Nova. The next day, he meets up with Belle again at the tavern, to notify her of his plans to run away with Nova. As thanks for her previous advice, Dreamy gives her a bag of fairy dust. Nearby, a discussion goes on between some men about a quest to slay a yagouai in a far-off land. Dreamy thinks it's the perfect opportunity for Belle to have a real adventure, and, with Dreamy's encouragement, Belle decides to go. ("Dreamy", "The Outsider")

While hiding in King Midas' realm, Snow White enters a tavern, where she hears news of Prince Charming's upcoming wedding to his fiancée, Princess Abigail. Suddenly, a man bursts in to report that the Evil Queen has helped a werewolf pack seize control of the silver mines and they are terrorizing villagers in their search of Snow White. Worried about innocent lives at stake, Snow White uncloaks herself to the pub patrons and requests that they tell the Queen she will be waiting for her in the woods. ("Shadow of the Queen")

Snow White, the dwarves, Prince Charming and a group of villagers gathers outside the tavern where the Evil Queen and Tinker Bell had dinner several years ago.[7] Snow White rallies the villagers with a speech exposing the truth about the Evil Queen’s evil ways; including King Leopold's murder and her own plight under the Sleeping Curse. The townspeople agree the Queen's reign of terror must end, but when she asks them to join her to reclaim the throne, no one speaks up. The Queen arrives and asks Snow White to give up her claim to the throne and go into exile, as the real satisfaction isn't killing the princess but taking everything that belongs to her. Then, she orders Snow White to swear on King Leopold’s grave to revoke her own petition to the throne. When Snow White challenges this, the Queen threatens a peasant girl's life. Snow White charges toward the Queen, who simply disappears in a puff of smoke, causing her to fall flat on the ground. The Queen warns them that they must answer before sundown of the next day, and for every day Snow White refuses, one of her loyal subjects will perish. However, Snow White turns down the deal the next day and manages to cut the queen with her sword. Declaring her intent to fight for the throne, Snow White stands her ground as the Queen retreats. ("Lost Girl")

The night after Snow White's wish to protect her unborn daughter is granted in the form of a singing spell, she and Prince Charming track down Hook in a tavern and offer him a bag of coins as payment if he allows them passage on his ship to the Evil Queen's castle. Hook rejects their offer and instead sings about his deep-seated desire for revenge against Rumplestiltskin, whom the couple promise to turn over to him if he helps them. Only then, Hook agrees and lets them take his ship to get to the Queen, however, after the Blue Fairy erases the memories of those affected by the singing spell, the deal is completely forgotten by Snow, Charming, and Hook. ("The Song in Your Heart")

Before she can exact the ultimate revenge on Snow White and the other Enchanted Forest inhabitants by casting a curse, the Evil Queen strikes a deal with Hook to help him get his revenge on Rumplestiltskin, if he kills her mother, Cora. As assurance he has no weaknesses, she tests Hook by tasking him with confronting a man. As they enter a tavern, a massive brawler comes over and exclaims that "pirates ain't welcome here". Hook mistakenly believes Regina wants him to fight the brawler, but the Queen, frustrated Hook has failed to understand her true intentions, snaps the brawler's neck with her magic. She then turns Hook around to make him look at the tavern counter, where Hook's father, Brennan, who abandoned him when he was a child, is now working at the tavern as a bartender. ("Swan Song")

As Brennan prepares to close up the tavern for the night, he discovers the last patron in the room is his son. Brennan explains what happened after he abandoned him and the path that led him into changing into a better person. Seeing his father harbor regret that he wasn't the parent he should have been, Hook decides to spare his life by giving him passage to elsewhere, as a way to trick the Queen into believing Brennan is dead. Brennan then asks Hook to secure a second ticket for leaving the land, which he needs for his young son. Hook is surprised to hear that his father has another son, but he agrees to procure another ticket. ("Swan Song")

Before Second Curse
After successfully pilfering riches from a carriage on the road, Hook and his crewmates celebrate at a tavern;[8] the same tavern where Cora used to work as a waitress several decades earlier.[9] Hook is gifted a prostitute by his peers, but he merely pretends to accept by leading the woman outside, where he pays her money to send her away. Moments later, he is attacked by Ariel, who accuses him of kidnapping Prince Eric onto the Jolly Roger. However, Hook is equally stunned since his ship is currently missing. Upon seeing the letters "BB" engraved on the weapon she has, he realizes both the ship and Eric must have been taken by the pirate Black Beard. Hook and his first mate, Smee, decide to hunt down the ship, and Ariel decides to come with them. ("The Jolly Roger")

During Alternate Reality
After the Author rewrites everyone's stories in the Heroes and Villains book, an alternate reality of the Enchanted Forest forms. Within the story, Robin Hood saves a fellow thief, Regina, from the evil Queen Snow White. Robin takes her to a tavern, where they share drinks and he offers her leadership over the Merry Men, but Regina declines. He then talks about his reasons for giving up his position, to which his bride-to-be, Zelena, walks in. Zelena invites her to their wedding ceremony, but Regina refuses, believing she has to make haste since the Queen is looking for her. ("Operation Mongoose Part 1")

Before Third Curse
In DunBroch, Mulan works for an unnamed employer collecting money debts. During one such debt collection, she visits a tavern, where she forces a man named Edgar and two other brutes to pay up by threatening to maim them. Queen Merida finds her in the aftermath and is shocked to see how much her old friend has changed. Because Mulan's main motivation is money, Merida pays her in order to secure her help in finding an enchanted helm that belonged to her father, King Fergus. ("The Bear King")

After Third Curse

After being robbed by Robin of Locksley in the Wish Realm, Regina tracks Robin down to a nearby tavern, which is the Wish Realm replica of where Tinker Bell once led her to Robin Hood. Regina enters, causing the other patrons to flee in fear of her, as they believe she is the Evil Queen, while Robin remains calmly seated. Upon seeing her face, he is surprised to learn she is the Queen and ponders if she wants the jewels that he previously stole from her, but instead Regina asks if he is happy with his life. Robin claims he is because he lives at his own whim and doesn't have to answer to anyone. Regina accepts his answer passively, believing this means this version of Robin is better off without her, but as she leaves, he questions why she cares about his happiness. Before Regina can tell him, the Sheriff of Nottingham bursts in, immobilizing Regina's magic with a cuff, before capturing both her and Robin. ("Tougher Than the Rest")

Transported back to the Wish Realm by the Evil Queen, Robin goes to the tavern for some ale. In Storybrooke, after Regina helps to reform her, the Queen asks Regina if she regrets not taking a chance with the original Robin by walking into the tavern all those years ago. Regina confirms she doesn't because everything she has now would not exist had she chosen differently then. Upon being transported to the Wish Realm to begin a new life, the Queen stumbles upon the tavern, where she sees Robin inside and goes to him. When Robin notices her, he asks if he can finish his ale first before she kidnaps him again. The Queen clarifies that she has no such plans and apologizes for how she treated him earlier. She tells him about things not working out in Storybrooke, but she has moved on and just wants a fresh start. Robin offers to buy her a drink and pours a cup for her once she sits down. ("Page 23")

After leaving the restored land of Agrabah, Hook finds Black Beard gambling in a tavern and offers him a bag of jewels for a magic bean to return home. Black Beard is unimpressed by the gems, even after Hook informs him they're Agrabahan jewels, as this only makes him laugh at the thought of Killian sailing the seas in a desert of all places. Hook brings up the fact Black Beard has been without a ship since losing the Jolly Roger in Arendelle, a sore reminder that angers Black Beard, who tries to challenge Hook to a duel. Rather than that, Hook offers up the Jolly Roger to him if he bests him in a card game. Accepting the deal, Black Beard nods to one of his pirate mates, who promptly grabs the other pirate seated next to him and hurls him to the floor, in order to make room for Hook to sit at the table. Once Black Beard beats Hook in the game, he eagerly follows Killian out of the tavern to collect his prize at the docks. ("Mother's Little Helper")

After Fourth Curse

On the advice of Rumplestiltskin, Hook tracks down Captain Ahab at a tavern in the Wish Realm because the pirate possesses a magical item, Maui's fish hook, which he needs to free his daughter Alice from a tower. He enters the building to be greeted by Smee, his old crewmate who he made the captain of the Jolly Roger. Smee is elated to see him and offers to return the ship to him, but Hook declines. Ahab, with a peg leg, totters up to get his first look at the infamous Captain Hook and is thoroughly unimpressed, remarking that he an "old man" now. Upon learning Hook wants the fish hook, Ahab expresses interest in fighting him for it, but Hook refuses to partake in a bloodbath and instead suggests a dice game. Hook beats him fair and square by rolling a strong hand, which forces the latter to forfeit the fish hook to him. Ahab questions him on the rumors that he has gone soft and given up on hunting his crocodile, but Hook boldly claims he intends to use the fish hook to kill the Dark One. ("Knightfall")

For Henry's 19th birthday, Jack takes him to a New Enchanted Forest tavern, The Crimson Crow, where he buys him the first of many drinks that he has that day. Afterward, they part ways as Henry plans to return to his home of Storybrooke and Jack plans to go to Agrabah. ("Chosen")

In the New Enchanted Forest, Princess Tiana consults a witch doctor, Dr. Facilier, for where she might find a prince who can save her from a life of hardship. Facilier foretells that she will meet her prince by following the red crow, which Tiana locates in the form of a tavern called The Crimson Crow. After going in, an unruly patron attempts to intimidate her into handing over her earrings, however, she is saved by a prince named Marias, who, unknown to her, has been manipulated by Facilier into pretending to be a royal. ("Greenbacks")

To help Henry obtain a ring with a powerful story behind it, Hook sets up a ruse with Black Beard, Smee, and the rest of the crew on the Jolly Roger to provide just that. He then brings Henry to a tavern in the Wish Realm called Fish & Bird, where they discuss their plans to use a map to locate Davy Jones' Locker and unearth buried sea treasures. As they talk, Black Beard and his crew enter and announce their plans to recruit more men for an upcoming voyage. As part of the ruse, Hook tells Henry that, while Smee used to own the Jolly Roger, Black Beard took it from him and is now its captain, so they have to sneak aboard the vessel and retake it before steering it to Davy Jones' Locker. ("Breadcrumbs")

After meeting Alice, Robin Hood runs off to a local tavern in the New Enchanted Forest, The Double Woodpecker, in order to join up with a hunting party who are going after a troll. Alice manages to follow her there, to Robin's dismay as she hoped to outrun the girl because she has had intense track training, though Alice declares she once outran a Bandersnatch. When Robin goes into the tavern, the leader of the hunting party, Clayton, suggests she can stay and look after the women and children, but Robin is adamant about going with the men. Alice, who is friendly with the troll, insists he is a gentle giant and would not hurt anyone. Clayton dismisses her by having his men lock up Alice as well as Robin, who he believes is Alice's friend. ("The Girl in the Tower")

After Fifth Curse
While being held as Sir Henry's prisoner in the Wish Realm, Regina dreams about being in a tavern where Robin Hood brings her a drink. The lovers have a bittersweet reunion as Regina tells him she might be joining him soon as Sir Henry, a version of her son, wants her dead. When they talk about her past as a villain, Regina recalls Robin was the one who got her to change into a better person, though Robin believes that while he did help, she changed on her own and now Henry can too if she shows him it is possible to turn over a new leaf as she did. Regina considers how unfair it was that their time together was so short, and Robin suggests that this doesn't make what they had any less epic. The two kiss, and after, Robin places a red feather in her hand, which Regina doesn't see until after she wakes up from the dream. ("Leaving Storybrooke")
