The Storybrooke Wilderness Park,[1] also known as the Storybrooke Forest, is a Storybrooke location on ABC's Once Upon a Time. It first appears in the first episode of the first season.
History
Kurt Flynn and his son Owen are camping in the woods when suddenly, a strong wind approaches and the pair retreat into their tent as the storm passes through. In the morning, Kurt finds that his car is pinned down by a fallen tree. The two use a map to get to a highway to hitch a ride to the nearest town. On the way there, Kurt notices a town in the distance, much to Kurt's disbelief since they drove through the same area on the previous day and there was nothing there. This town is Storybrooke, which, unbeknownst to Kurt, has just come into existence due to the Dark Curse. ("Welcome to Storybrooke")
After a series of encounters with Regina, the mayor of Storybrooke, Kurt and Owen speed off in their newly repaired car and try to make it past the town line, only to be blocked by Sheriff Graham's sheriff car. Kurt instructs Owen to get out of the car and run as fast as he can into the woods to call his uncle. Regina, although she wished for Owen to stay her, allows him to leave. Owen later leads two police officers to the border of Storybrooke in hopes of finding his father, but the town is no longer visible to him or anyone outside the town line. The police officers lead Owen away as Regina tearfully watches on from inside the town line. ("Welcome to Storybrooke")
With Owen gone, Regina disposes of Kurt by killing him and burying his remains at the former campsite where he and Owen once stayed. ("Second Star to the Right")
Twenty-eight years later, Emma first arrives in Storybrooke and drives Henry through the woods to get to town. ("Pilot")
Later, Emma and Henry return to the woods with Graham and Mary Margaret to search for John Doe after he runs away from the hospital. They eventually find him at Toll Bridge. ("Snow Falls")
While looking for Ashley, Emma and Henry find her in labor at the town line. ("The Price of Gold")
Graham follows the wolf into the woods where he runs into Mr. Gold. Graham tells Gold about the wolf. Mr. Gold suggests that dreams are memories from another life. When Graham finds the wolf, he whistles and the wolf goes to him. As he pets the wolf's head, he starts to wake up. ("The Heart Is a Lonely Hunter")
With the intention of taking them to Boston, Emma drives Ava and Nicholas to the town line. Right before she crosses, her engine stalls. The Sheriff calls for help. Michael Tillman arrives to help Emma with her car. Emma tells him that she wanted him to see his children one last time. She tells him that she does not need to take them if he accepts them as his children. Michael says that she does not. ("True North")
While walking along a trail, Mary Margaret finds a dove caught in a net. After getting it help at the vet, she returns it to the woods but is caught up in the storm. Startled by thunder, Mary Margaret nearly slips off a crest but David catches her. They take shelter in Mr. Gold's cabin. Mary Margaret reveals to David that Kathryn might be pregnant. When the storm clears, the two release the dove. ("7:15 A.M.")
Emma and Sidney follow Regina in the squad car as she turns onto Access Road 23. As she approaches the turn, Emma’s breaks fail. Weeks later, Emma watches Henry play with other children on the new playground, Emma tells Henry through the walkie talkie that even though they have to spend some time apart, Emma will continue to search for his book. ("Fruit of the Poisonous Tree")
After Moe French steals items from him, Mr. Gold kidnaps the thief to his cabin for interrogation. Moe denies knowing the item's whereabouts. Mr. Gold beats Moe with his cane and accuses him of inflicting pain to "her." Emma finds them and arrests Mr. Gold. ("Skin Deep")
August takes Emma on a date out to an old well. He tells her that the well water is magical and will return something that they have lost and proceeds to tell Emma to have a little faith. ("What Happened to Frederick")
Emma and Ruby investigate Kathryn’s last known location. They follow tracks when Ruby hears David nearby at the Toll Bridge. They find him unconscious. When he revives, he has no recollection of anything that has happened since the previous night. Later, Ruby finds a buried box and shows Emma the contents. ("Red-Handed")
Mary Margaret escapes her jail cell and runs away to the woods. Emma goes to find her, as she will never prove her roommate's innocence if anyone finds out that Mary Margaret escaped. While driving down the road, Emma swerves to avoid hitting a man. She claims that she is looking for a lost dog, and he offers to help. He introduces himself as Jefferson. Emma gives the limping man a ride home. ("Hat Trick")
Emma returns to Toll Bridge with August to look for clues. Emma looks into Ruby's hole and finds a shard from a shovel. Emma realizes that if she can find out who owns that shovel, they can clear Mary Margaret. August asks if she knows who the shovel belongs to. Emma responds with a knowing smile. ("The Stable Boy")
Outside his cabin, Mr. Gold approaches the man who he believes is his son. The stranger lies about his identity. As the pair reconcile, August coerces Mr. Gold to give him the dagger. August tries to control him with the dagger. Mr. Gold realizes August is not his son and threatens him. August reveals his agenda is to have Emma break the curse. Mr. Gold decides to let August live to see the mission through. ("The Return")
While driving out of town, David slams on the breaks when he wakes up. David turns to look towards the town, and returns. ("A Land Without Magic")Inhabitants

Trivia
On-Screen Notes
- According to Jefferson's map, Route 6 runs the boundary of the forest. ("Hat Trick")
- Two of the trails in Storybrooke Wilderness Park are the White Pine Trail, where Greg bumps into Henry while going on a hike, and Yarrow Lane,[1] where Elsa tracks her sister Anna. ("Welcome to Storybrooke," "Breaking Glass")
- The Storybrooke Wilderness Park is divided into at least three areas:
- The North Woods ("Family Business," "Tougher Than the Rest," "Ill-Boding Patterns")
- The East Woods ("The Price")
- The South Woods ("Awake")
- This location is separate from the Storybrooke Heritage Park.[2] ("Smash the Mirror")
- A false police report created by the curse, mentions New Year festivities in "Storybrooke Park."[3] However, it is not known which park this refers to. ("The Heart Is a Lonely Hunter")
- Two other Storybrooke parks, the Storybrooke Centennial Park and the Alder Park, appear on Greg and Tamara's map of Storybrooke.[4] ("Lacey")
- In addition, three more parks appear on a Historical Storybrooke prop sign created for the episode "Lacey" (the sign appears in the actual episode, but it is too far away to read): Winnowers Park, Gottling Park and Foreshore Park.[5]
- Yet another park is mentioned on a prop sign created for the episode "The Snow Queen," which reveals that the scene where Emma is sitting alone in her car at night takes place in Rowan Hill Park.[6] However, the sign does not appear on-screen.
- Rowan Hill is mentioned on a map of Storybrooke in "Manhattan"[7] and "The Queen Is Dead."[8]
- There is a small graveyard in the park.[9] ("Page 23")
Production Notes
- The scenes with Emma and Gideon in the Sorcerer's mansion in "Mother's Little Helper" were originally supposed to take place in the forest but were moved indoors due to heavy rain.[10]
Popular Culture
- The song playing on the radio beside Kurt and Owen's campsite is "This Must Be the Place (Native Melody)" by Talking Heads. ("Welcome to Storybrooke")
- While practicing archery in the woods, Mary Margaret listens to Joan Jett's "Bad Reputation." ("Selfless, Brave and True")
