Sonequa Martin-Green is the American actor who portrays Tamara on ABC's Once Upon a Time.

Biography

Sonequa Martin-Green, was born in Russellville, Alabama.[3] She caught the acting bug in a fourth grade play. Throughout childhood, Sonequa continued to perform in school plays but it was her time at Russellville High School that really cemented her future career choice.[4] While aspiring to be a psychiatrist, she learned to love acting during her participation in a play at a nearby festival and got the lead role in the piece 'dentity Crisis by Christopher Durang. In her own words, she realized acting "is what makes my soul happy. How did I think I could do anything else?"[5] She wasted no time and asked a visiting director from out of town how to get started in training to be an actor. He suggested enrolling in a college and earning her actor skills there. Deciding to focus on theatre, Sonequa aimed to enter the University of Alabama.[4]

As a student of the University of Alabama's Theatre and Dance, she frequently appeared in several campus productions and was a regular performer at Alpha Psi Omega's Guerrilla Theatre shows. She graduated in 2007,[3] and two months later, moved to New York.[5]

She is best known for her roles in many popular television shows such as Kanessa Jones on Army Wives. Other roles she has starred in are Courtney Wells on The Good Wife and Sasha on The Walking Dead respectively. She earned the starring role of Michael Burnham on Star Trek: Discovery.

Sonequa met her future husband, southern California native Kendrick Green, while they acted in a play together in Princeton, New Jersey.[4] They currently have one son, who was born in January 2015, named Kenric Justin Green II.[6]

Trivia

  • Sonequa's hometown mayor David Grissom dubbed July 27, 2013 "Sonequa Martin-Green Day" to celebrate her accomplishments in the acting business.[4]
