Sebastian Stan is the Romanian-American actor who portrays Jefferson on ABC's Once Upon a Time.

Sebastian Stan was born on August 13, 1983[citation needed] in the Romanian city of Constanţa. Aged eight, he and his mother moved to Vienna,[1] where she worked as a concert pianist.[2] Four years later when Sebastian turned twelve,[1] they went overseas to live in Rockland County, New York[3] after she married the headmaster of an American private school.[4][5]

During his years at the Rockland Country Day School, he starred in productions such as Harvey, Cyrano de Bergerac, Little Shop of Horrors, Over Here, and West Side Story. He also attended the Stagedoor Manor[6] summer camp where he received an introduction to acting and was cast in many camp productions like Grease and Sweet Charity.[4] Looking toward the future in performance, Sebastian applied to acting programs at several universities.[4]

He was accepted to and attended Rutgers University's Mason Gross School of the Arts. This gave him the opportunity to spend a year abroad studying acting at Shakespeare's Globe Theatre in London, England. While earning his Bachelor in Arts, he worked on a few independent films and landed a prime television role in the 2003 season finale of Law & Order in a plotline based on the real life Washington, D.C. sniper shootings. His feature film debut was in Renny Harlin's Lost Boys-esque 2006 supernatural thriller The Covenant.[4] In 2007, Sebastian guest starred as habitual liar Carter Baizen on The CW's young adult drama Gossip Girl. He reprised the character in the season two finale, and became a recurring character in season three who becomes romantically interested in Serena van der Woodsen, portrayed by co-star Blake Lively. During 2010, Sebastian continued to build his filmography resume with minor appearances in Steve Pink's science fiction comedy Hot Tub Time Machine and Darren Aronofsky's ballet thriller Black Swan until nabbing the role of Marvel Comics-based character Bucky in 2011 superhero film Captain America: The First Avenger. He reprised the role in the sequel Captain America: The Winter Soldier as the Winter Soldier.[7]

With his career blowing up on screen, Sebastian is also starred in a 2013 Roundabout Theater Company production of William Inge's Picnic opposite Maggie Grace at the New York-based American Airlines Theater,[8] which ended its last show on February 24, 2013.[3]
