Rumpelstiltskin was locked up in fairytale land. He's portayed by Robert Carlyle. He can see the future and helped both the Evil Queen and Snow White. In exchange for the secret to completing the Evil Queen's curse, he now has riches and comfort in the new world, and the earth version of her, Regina Millis, will give him anything he asks for as long as he says "please".
History
In the traditional fairytales, Rumpelstiltskin was an imp, who spun straw into gold for a girl in return for her first-born child. In Storybrooke, Maine, this girl is Princess Cinderella.
Year later, when their first child was born, Rumpelstiltskin returned to claim his payment. The newly made Queen was frightened and offered him all the wealth she had if she could keep the child. He refused but finally agreed to give up his claim to the child if the queen could guess his name in three days.
She has spies figure it out, and he loses his bargain. It is unknown how it will turn out in The Price of Gold.
