History
Reason: Regina Rising recap
Cora, conspiring for her daughter Regina to earn a marriage proposal from King Leopold, begins her plan by setting up an afternoon horseback riding session for her. With her best steed, Rocinante, Regina rides as a demonstration for her father, Henry, while Cora openly disapproves of her not using a saddle. After an argument, in which Cora subdues her daughter with magic, Regina runs off. Unknown to her mother, Regina and the stable boy, Daniel, are in love. Knowing that King Leopold and his daughter Snow White are currently travelling through the lands, Cora deliberately startles the princess' horse. Snow White, unable to regain control of her horse, calls for help. Regina then comes to her aid, catching up to the runaway horse with her own steed, and then pulling the girl to safety. As Cora desired, this courageous feat catches King Leopold's attention, and he proposes to Regina. Although Cora accepts the proposal for her, Regina rebells by intending to run away and start a new life with Daniel. Snow White catches the couple in a kiss, but after Regina explains the situation and how Cora wouldn't allow them to be together, the princess agrees to keep her secret. However, in a misguided moment, Snow White later reveals the truth to Cora, who kills Daniel to ensure her daughter becomes Queen. ("The Stable Boy," "The Queen Is Dead")
Before the wedding approaches, Regina attempts to escape with Rocinante, however, he is not able to run fast enough before she is caught in Cora's magical vines. Desperate to get away from her mother's control, she finds an ally in Rumplestiltskin, who gives her a looking glass to send Cora to another realm. With Cora banished, Regina makes her way out of the kingdom accompanied only by Rocinante. On the trek, Rumplestiltskin manifests and persistently prods her about how it felt to use magic. Finally, Regina admits she liked it, so Rumplestiltskin offers to teach her more magic. Recalling Cora's power obsession with magic, she expresses fears about turning out like her mother, although Rumplestiltskin reasons that is up to her. Thus, Regina decides to stay rather than leave. ("We Are Both")
After being Queen for many years, Regina murders her husband and begins to exact revenge on Snow White for Daniel's death. She successfully curses the princess into an eternal sleep, but Snow White's true love, Prince Charming, revives her. As a last option, Regina makes plans to cast a curse to make everyone, including Snow White, miserable. Out of necessity for the curse, the heart of the thing she loves most is needed, so Regina sacrifices Rocinante's heart. Nevertheless, the curse fails, and she goes to ask the curse creator, Rumplestiltskin, for answers. ("The Thing You Love Most")
Trivia
Production Notes
- During the shooting of the scene where Cora kills Daniel, when Lana Parrilla screamed "no," Jerry the horse, who plays Rocinante, would constantly make sounds and kick the door in his stall, and had to be walked out.[1] ("The Stable Boy")
- Jerry the horse also plays the horse that Regina heals in "Devil's Due"; notice the identical markings in the form of the white blaze on his face and the white socks on his left front leg and right hind leg.[3] However, it is not known if this is actually supposed to be Rocinante, or a different horse.
Set Dressing
- There is a horse statue above the fireplace in Regina's office at the Storybrooke Town Hall.[4] ("The Thing You Love Most" et al.)
- Over Regina's living room fireplace, there is a framed artwork of two horses.[5] It is later replaced with a similar artwork of two different horses.[6] ("Bleeding Through," "Broken Heart," "The Savior," "The Black Fairy")
