History
During the Curse
Sometime after aging out of the foster system, an approximately seventeen or eighteen-year-old Emma Swan arrives in Portland. One day, she steals a yellow Volkswagen Beetle, only to discover that it already has been stolen by a man named Neal Cassidy. The two then have an encounter with a police officer, and become very close.
After a short amount of time, the two become a couple, and also go on a crime spree. Emma fakes a pregnancy to distract a cashier while the two rob a convenience store, and they break into motel rooms after their rightful occupants leave. They plan on relocating to Tallahassee, however, Neal becomes aware that there is a warrant out for his arrest for stealing watches. He tells Emma the stolen watches are in a locker in a train station, but he cannot get them himself, so she volunteers to grab them. She succeeds in this task, and Neal gives her one of the watches but plans on pawning the rest. They two agree to meet up later in a designated spot.
A mysterious man, August Booth, tracks down Neal and pressures him to no longer be a part of Emma's life, and he must let her be arrested for the theft of the watches. He explains to Neal that Emma has a great destiny she must fulfill; proving he has knowledge about Neal's past by opening a box containing a typewriter with the words, "I know you're Baelfire", typed on a piece of paper. Neal is shaken up that his former identity is known by someone else other than himself, and agrees to give up on Emma.
Emma arrives at their promised meeting place only to have a policeman arrest her for the watch heist as she is wearing one of the watches and they have footage from the bus station. August leaves the city while Neal flees with the money from the watches as well as the car, and Emma is sentenced to eleven months in a Phoenix jailhouse. ("Tallahassee")

Production Notes
- For the episode "Tallahassee", the Portland scenes were filmed in Vancouver,[5] British Columbia, where production for Once Upon a Time is based.
- Portland is referred to on Lost, another TV show that Edward Kitsis and Adam Horowitz has been involved with. The location is also a reference to the Lost episode "Not In Portland".
- The flashback scene in "There's No Place Like Home" where Neal and Emma break into the fairground was originally scripted to be them breaking through the gate to a view of Portland at night. The production team found an abandoned amusement park, and felt that Neal showing this kind of place to Emma was something that the character would do.[6]
