The Poisonous Apple was first seen in the 9th episode of True North, and it was used by the Evil Queen in order of getting Snow White under the Sleeping Curse.

The Evil Queen traded the Dark Curse, which was given to her by Rumplestiltskin, for the Sleeping Curse, a curse that was created and in possession the Maleficent. The curse was used on the apple so that whoever bites it willingly falls under an endless sleep. They remain eternally trapped inside their sleeping body, as if in a coffin, unless the curse is broken by a true love kiss.

At some point, this poisoned apple was stolen by the Blind Witch and so the Evil Queen sent Hansel and Gretel the her Gingerbread house so they could bring it back. They succeed on their mission, bringing the apple back to the Evil Queen.

The apple was eventually offered to Snow White by the Evil Queen, who explained how it worked and gave Snow the option of biting it or refusing. If Snow refused the apple, the Evil Queen would kill Prince Charming. Snow White willingly bit the apple, placing her under the Sleeping Curse until Prince Charming woke her up.

Regina later retrieved the apple from Fairytale Land by having Jefferson bring it back to Storybrooke through his hat. The apple still had the bite mark from Snow eating it in Fairytale Land. Regina cut the apple into slices and baked it in a tart, intened for Emma.

The apple appears to still have its magic in Storybrook. When Henry ate some of the apple at the end of An Apple Red as Blood, he soon fell to the floor just like Snow.
