Mermaid Magic is a type of magic featured on ABC's Once Upon a Time. It first appears in the first episode of the third season.
Mermaid magic is based on the magic of the same name from European folklore.[1]
Uses
Mermaid magic is a set of magical abilities possessed by mermaids. It enables mermaids to:
- Travel across realms ("Ariel," "Dark Hollow")
- Communicate across them using enchanted conch shells ("Ariel")
- Summon storms ("The Heart of the Truest Believer")
- Make hypnotic powerful voice that can lure ships to their death ("Poor Unfortunate Soul")

Trivia
On-Screen Notes
- When world-crossing, mermaids may have to travel couple of worlds in order to get where they want, unlike magic doors, cyclones or other world-crossing elements that directly transport someone to their destination. ("Dark Hollow")
- Even after she turned herself into a cecaelia, Ursula is still able to use mermaid magic. It is unknown if it means that cecaelias are also capable of using mermaid magic, or if Ursula just kept her mermaid abilities despite her transformation. ("Poor Unfortunate Soul")
