During First Curse

Once the first curse is enacted, many Enchanted Forest inhabitants are given new lives in the town of Storybrooke. Among them is Michael, who owns Marine Garage as a mechanic fixing cars. One of his employees, Billy, also works there. ("Pilot")

Some days after the curse, the town receives unexpected guests, Kurt and his son Owen, after their car breaks down. Until the vehicle is fixed at Marine Garage, the father-son pair stay at the inn. Regina, unhappy with their presence, asks Billy to speed up the car repairs so the strangers can leave Storybrooke by the end of the week. After forming a bond with Owen, she regrets her decision and attempts to stall their leaving. However, when Regina goes to Billy again, he tells her that Kurt already visited Marine Garage earlier with Owen to pick up his car. Frantically, she rushes to her office in search of Graham's heart, commanding him to arrest Kurt on false charges, so he and Owen will be forced to stay. ("Welcome to Storybrooke")

Finding two siblings, Ava and Nicholas Zimmer, with no parental guardian since their mother died, Emma attempts to track down their biological father. With their mother's compass, she traces it to a pawnshop, where Mr. Gold tells her the name of the man who purchased it, Michael. Finding the intended father at Marine Garage, Emma confronts him about the children, though he doesn't believe they are his. Even with the compass as proof, Michael insists he isn't father material and can't provide them with a good home. Since he will not accept responsibility, she resigns to bringing the siblings to a children's home in Boston. ("True North")

Filming Locations

  • Marine Garage is a real, former gas station on Moncton Street in Steveston Village, which doubles as the backdrop of the town of Storybrooke on Once Upon a Time.
    • The real-life Marine Garage is an heritage-protected building, meaning that its owners are required to preserve the exterior of the building as a means to retain the Steveston village character. Thanks to this, the gas pumps (no longer in use) outside the building are preserved. Today, Marine Garage is solely a mechanics garage under the name of Seppo's Automotive.[4]
    • The real Seppo's Automative sign can be spotted, hidden behind a bench, when Mary Margaret walks past the building in "A Land Without Magic" and when Emma and her friends are hiding from the Chernabog in "Darkness on the Edge of Town."[1]
    • This building is also used as the site of the Miracle Ministry tent in the fictional town of Kenwood, Tennessee in The X-Files episode "Miracle Man" (an episode which features Once Upon a Time guest star Chilton Crane),[5] the Cooch County Service Station in the Backstrom episode "Rock Bottom"[6] and Jack's Gas in the Supernatural episode "Route 666."[7]
