The Magical Rose[1] is a magical plant featured on ABC's Once Upon a Time. It first appears in the first episode of the fifth season.
The magical rose is based on the stolen rose from the fairytale "Beauty and the Beast," and on the enchanted rose from the Disney film, Beauty and the Beast.
History
Seeing Belle fret over a comatose Mr. Gold, Mother Superior encourages her to join the others, who may need her resourcefulness to help find Emma. Belle declines, wanting to stay with Mr. Gold, in case he suddenly passes away. Using her wand, Mother Superior conjures a rose in a glass cover and links it to Mr. Gold's lifespan, so Belle will know he is alive, as long as the petals on the flower remain. Belle takes the jar with her when she goes to find her allies, and it remains with her after her journey to the Enchanted Forest. ("The Dark Swan")
During the ball to welcome the heroes to Camelot hosted by Arthur, Belle stands on the sidelines watching the rose instead of dancing. Leroy approaches her and explains that he sees the rose as a sign of hope: while every lost petal means Mr. Gold is closer to death, every petal still on the rose is another chance to save him. Grateful for his encouragement, Belle asks if he would like to dance. ("The Price")
After turning Hook into a Dark One, Emma absorbs his memories from the last six weeks into a dreamcatcher. She then teleports Belle and the rose, along with the other traveling companions, into the diner and absorbs their memories as well, to ensure no one remembers Hook becoming a Dark One. The Dark Curse then whisks everyone home to Storybrooke. ("Broken Heart")
Six weeks after their departure to Camelot, Belle and the other Storybrooke natives with her are whisked home, after something forces the diner out of Camelot, with Belle still having the magical rose in her possession. ("The Dark Swan")
During the day, Belle rushes into the diner to pick up a sandwich from Granny, when the second-to-last petal on the magical rose falls off. Belle thinks it means Mr. Gold is close to dying, but a second later, all the fallen petals dissipate and regenerate on the rose. Realizing Mr. Gold is actually waking up, Belle takes off to the pawnshop, but she finds him gone from the cot. ("Siege Perilous")
Trivia
Props Notes
- The magical rose is pictured on the cover of the travel book that Mr. Gold gives to Belle.[2] ("Beauty," "Is This Henry Mills?")
- The bell jar used for the magical rose[3] was re-used as the Firefly Ruby's bell jar in "Greenbacks".[4]
