Tucker is Red
's classmate. At thirteen years old, he is described as scrawny, spotty-skinned, and mean as a badger. His hair often has a whitish powder in it, as he is the miller's son. Red doesn't like him just as the other village kids don't, but Peter
pities him and frequently asks him to join in on after-school activities. Tucker tries to kiss a thirteen-year-old Red but she forces him to let her go by kneading him in the crotch. He then reacts with bewilderment, revealing he thought she wanted that sort of attention, as Violet
has suggested Red's red cloak
was an implication of her looseness. Peter is angry upon finding Tucker with Red, and although Red says Tucker only touched her cloak, he hits the latter square in the jaw.
After this incident, Peter and the other children stop including Tucker in their games. Within those three years, Tucker becomes muscular and towers at over six feet tall. He rarely comes to school and instead works for his family. At the village market, Seamstress Evans
' son accidentally reveals Red has flour in her basket that she stole. Red prevents him from checking her basket by kissing him and then running away.
At school, under Violet's manipulation, Tucker admits Red kissed him at the market but as everyone else in the schoolyard titters over Red's apparent lack of chastity, he looks equally as uncomfortable as Red is.
