Lanterns are items featured on ABC's Once Upon a Time. They first appear in the ninth episode of the seventh season.

Lanterns are based on the floating lanterns, from Disney's Tangled.

History

After Fourth Curse

In the New Enchanted Forest, Rapunzel has two daughters, Drizella and Anastasia. During a lean season, Rapunzel and her family travels to Gothel's garden to find some radishes to feed her family. As she leaves the carriage, she grabs a lantern, telling Anastasia that their lanterns will connect them and help them find each other. Immediately afterward, Rapunzel mysteriously disappears; unbeknownst to her family, she was caught by Gothel and imprisoned in a tower. ("One Little Tear")

One day, Anastasia and Drizella play hide-and-seek in the woods, however, Drizella panics when she cannot find her but eventually reunites with her after spotting a floating lit lantern nearby. Drizella worries they still cannot find their way home, but Anastasia takes her hands and has her close her eyes as she encourages her that they can do it together. When Drizella opens her eyes, she sees a path of lanterns, which guides them home. ("Sisterhood")

One night, Drizella comes up with an idea to use the lanterns to guide their mother home to her and Anastasia, despite that it's been years since her disappearance. Later, Anastasia is releasing the lit lanterns into the night sky, with Drizella trying to persuade her to come to the parlor to have some dessert. Anastasia doesn't want to give up yet and continues to have faith, even though Drizella thinks nothing will come out of the mission. Unknown to them, Rapunzel manages to escape the tower during this night and follows the lanterns home, where she happily envelopes Anastasia in a hug as Drizella watches. ("One Little Tear," "Secret Garden")

During Fifth Curse

Mr. Samdi provides Ivy with a facedown tarot card, telling her it will bring Anastasia to her. She then flips the card over to look at it, which has a picture of Anastasia with the lit lanterns that she and her sister once bonded over as children. In a secluded field in Hyperion Heights, Ivy prepares several lit lanterns and releases one into the air just as Anastasia shows up, clearly distrustful of her since their last run-in. ("Sisterhood")
