The Knave of Hearts is a character on ABC's Once Upon a Time. He débuts in the seventeenth episode of the first season and is portrayed by guest star Paul McGillion.
The Knave of Hearts is based on the character of the same name from the novel Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and the animated Disney film Alice in Wonderland; and the Knave of Hearts from the live-action Disney film Alice in Wonderland.
History
The Knave of Hearts waits on the Queen of Hearts in the world of Wonderland. He attempts to capture two intruders, Jefferson and the Evil Queen, who steal something from the Queen of Hearts' vault. After the Evil Queen escapes back to the Enchanted Forest, Jefferson is left stranded and caught by the Knave of Hearts. The guards haul him to the Queen of Hearts to answer for his crime of stealing. Through a long tube, she communicates to the Knave of Hearts, who announces in her stead. He informs Jefferson that the Queen of Hearts is quite unhappy with his theft of her belonging. Jefferson calls Regina "the Queen," to which the Queen of Hearts cuts him off with a stomp, prompting the Knave of Hearts to ask him to refrain from referring to that woman by such a name. Again, speaking on behalf of the Queen of Hearts, the Knave inquiries how he came to Wonderland. Jefferson doesn't answer, and instead asks if it's possible for him to go home to his daughter after he tells them. Annoyed at his response, the Queen of Hearts orders for his head to be taken off. Only after losing his body, yet still being alive, Jefferson confesses that his portal-jumping hat brought him to Wonderland, but Regina took it away. The Knave of Hearts instructs Jefferson to make another, though the latter laments that it won't work in Wonderland without magic. Unsympathetically, he presses Jefferson to make it work. ("Hat Trick")
When another stranger, Hook, arrives in Wonderland, the Knave of Hearts once again accosts and brings him before the Queen of Hearts. Once Hook discloses the Queen of Hearts' real name, she hastily commands the Knave of Hearts and the other courtiers to leave them alone in private. ("Queen of Hearts")
Trivia
Fairytales and Folklore
- "Knave" is another term for the "Jack" in a card deck, as some characters in Alice's Adventures in Wonderland are based on playing cards.
Set Dressing
- Among the numerous fairytale illustrations in Henry's room is "Who stole the Tarts?,"[1] by the famous English book illustrator Arthur Rackham. This illustration depicts a scene from Alice's Adventures in Wonderland where the Knave of Hearts is standing before the White Rabbit and the King and Queen of Hearts, as he (the Knave) stands trial for a tart burglary. (Note that the illustration can be seen on the right hand side of Henry's cuckoo clock, but not very clearly. It can be seen more clearly in a Flickr set photograph from Season Two.)[2] ("We Are Both")
