For the Season Three episode, see "Kansas." |
Kansas is a world[1] mentioned on ABC's Once Upon a Time. It is first mentioned in the fifth episode of the second season.
Kansas is based on the location of the same name from The Wonderful Wizard of Oz.
History
Walsh, a circus huckster from Kansas, is whisked away to the land of Oz by unknown means. ("It's Not Easy Being Green")
As a young girl, Dorothy Gale, a Kansas native, is swept away by a cyclone and brought to the land of Oz. After she defeats a wicked witch, the "Wizard of Oz" grants her a pair of silver slippers capable of crossing worlds and uses them to return to Kansas. On her return, her aunt Em is the only person who believes Dorothy about her prior adventure and refuses to let her be admitted into an asylum. ("Kansas," "Ruby Slippers")
At an older age, the munchkins notify Dorothy that the wicked witch, Zelena, is still alive and ruling over the land of Oz. Dorothy, who no longer fears the witch, uses the silver slippers in Kansas and travels back to Oz. ("Our Decay")
Trivia
On-Screen Notes
- In "The Doctor," Jefferson returns from Oz and says that the silver slippers, which Rumplestiltskin requested, had been moved to another land. Rumplestiltskin says that the slippers were what he needed to "get to that other land." Rumplestiltskin was referring to the Land Without Magic, implying that Kansas is in our world.
- However, Adam Horowitz later stated that Dorothy's Kansas is a fictional world.[1]
- The fact that a cyclone brought Dorothy from Kansas to Oz indicates that Kansas is a magical location. ("Kansas")
