"Heart of Stone" is the fifth episode of ABC's Once Upon a Time in Wonderland. It was written by Katie Wech and directed by Paul Edwards. It premiered on November 14, 2013.
Synopsis
In a flashback, Will Scarlet and Anastasia jump through the looking glass to enter Wonderland against her mother's wishes, since she disapproves of Will. They both soon realize that life in Wonderland isn't exactly what they had both imagined. After being humiliated while attending a ball at the palace, Ana convinces Will to steal the crown jewels in order to get them out of poverty, but in an instant, Ana is caught red handed by the King who makes her a proposition she can't refuse – to marry him and be his Queen to avoid prosecution. Meanwhile, in current Wonderland, the Red Queen convinces Alice to help her acquire magic dust in exchange for information about Cyrus, who in turn has managed to skillfully escape Jafar's castle leaving the White Rabbit in a compromising situation.[2]

Trivia
Event Chronology
- The Enchanted Forest flashbacks take place immediately after "Forget Me Not". (For more details, see the Enchanted Forest timeline)
- The Wonderland flashbacks occur after Will Scarlet and Anastasia arrival in "Forget Me Not" sometime before "Down the Rabbit Hole".
- The present-day Wonderland events take place after "The Serpent" and before "Who's Alice". (For more details, see the Wonderland timeline)
Disney
- The Red Queen has many aspects in common with Cinderella's stepsister from the Disney film, such as her name, Anastasia, and the fact that a prince chose her stepsister instead of herself.
Fairytales and Folklore
- This episode is a rendition of Through the Looking-Glass, focusing on the Red Queen's rise to power.
- Also included are Red King, Tweedledee, and Tweedledum from the same story.
- Also featured are Alice, the Knave of Hearts and the White Rabbit from Alice's Adventures in Wonderland as well as the sorcerer, the sultan and the genie from the "Aladdin" story.
- Will and Anastasia enter Wonderland by passing through a looking glass, just like Alice does to enter the looking-glass world in Through the Looking Glass.
- The Old Prisoner says that Jafar made him move giant rocks from the bottom of the stone staircase to the top. This is a reference to Sisyphus from Greek mythology, who was punished by being forced to roll an immense boulder up a hill, only to watch it roll back down, repeating this action for eternity.
- The White Rabbit tells Jafar that Alice enjoys tea parties, a reference to the Mad Hatter's tea party, which Alice attends in the novel.
Costume Notes
- The purple coats worn by two of the Red King's servants[4] and by the Red Queen's servants in "Trust Me",[5] are the same coats worn by the Genovia footmen in the 2004 romantic comedy film The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement.[6] The same coats were also worn by other servants on Once Upon a Time:
- The King's servants in "The Price of Gold"[7]
- King Xavier's servants in "The Miller's Daughter"[8]
- King Midas' servants in "Snow Drifts"[9]
- Prince Thomas' servants in "The Other Shoe"[10]
- King David and Queen Snow's servants in "Wish You Were Here"[11]
- The King's servants in "Hyperion Heights"[12]
- Tiana's servants in "The Eighth Witch"[13]
- The crown the Red King is wearing when introducing Anastasia to the inhabitants of Wonderland[14] is the same crown worn by the character Barney Stinson in the How I Met Your Mother episode "Third Wheel"[15] and Dean Winchester in the Supernatural episode "LARP and the Real Girl".[16]
Filming Locations
- Parts of this episode (or possibly "Who's Alice" or "Bad Blood") was filmed in a field near the gravelpits in Coquitlam and another (or the same) location past the same gravel pits; in addition, Burnaby's Central Park was used to film at least one scene with the Red Queen (again, this episode, or "Who's Alice" or "Bad Blood").[17]
- The Wonderland castle scene where Anastasia breaks into the Red King's cabinet to steal the jewels was filmed on a green-screen set at The Bridge Studios.[18]
