The Glass Slippers[1] are items featured on ABC's Once Upon a Time. They first appear in the fourth episode of the first season.
The Glass Slippers are based on the items of the same name from Charles Perrault's version of the fairy tale "Cinderella," and the glass slippers from the Disney film Cinderella and its direct-to-video sequel Cinderella III: A Twist in Time.
History
Acting in place of Cinderella's Fairy Godmother, Rumplestiltskin secures a deal with Ella before magicking her into a blue gown to wear to the upcoming ball, in addition to giving her a pair of Glass Slippers. At the ball, Ella makes a strong impression on Prince Thomas, however, her stepmother Lady Tremaine convinces her that the prince is only playing with her feelings for him. An upset Ella then flees from the ball, and in her haste to get away, one of her slippers ends up left behind on the staircase. After hearing from her stepsister Clorinda that Thomas is looking for her, Ella hopes to use the remaining slipper she has as proof of her identity, but Tremaine threatens to destroy it unless Ella reveals where Clorinda and her beau have run off to. Although Ella forfeits Clorinda's whereabouts, Tremaine cruelly shatters the slipper anyway, seemingly destroying Ella's chance with Thomas. Ella is then locked up by her stepmother to keep the prince from finding her, but with help from Gus, Thomas is able to free her. Thomas proposes to Ella, and after she accepts, he suggests getting help from the royal glass blower to fashion new slippers for the wedding. ("The Price of Gold," "The Other Shoe")
Cinderella later wears both slippers for their wedding. ("The Price of Gold")
Trivia
Production Notes
- Prince Thomas' line, "I'll wake the royal glass blower. You need new shoes.," from "The Other Shoe," was added because Lady Tremaine breaks one of Cinderella's Glass Slippers in this episode, but Cinderella was wearing both slippers at her wedding in "The Price of Gold."[2]
Disney
- To ruin her stepdaughter's evidence, Lady Tremaine picks up one of Cinderella's Glass Slippers (the one she didn't lose at the ball) with her cane and drops it, shattering the slipper into a thousand pieces. This mirrors a segment in the direct-to-video sequel Cinderella III: A Twist in Time, where this is the result of the Disney version of Lady Tremaine using the Fairy Godmother's wand to reverse time and undo Cinderella's happy ending. ("The Other Shoe")
Set Dressing
- Among the numerous fairy-tale illustrations pinned to the wall in Henry's room are an engraving[3] by the nineteenth century French artist Gustave Doré. It is from Les Contes de Perrault, an 1862 edition of the seventeenth century French author Charles Perrault's fairy tales (link to page), and depicts a scene from "Cinderella," where the prince lets the titular character try on the Glass Slipper. ("The Stable Boy," "A Land Without Magic," "Is This Henry Mills?")
