I am Sir Gaston, and you, beast, have taken—

—Gaston's final words src

Gaston is a character on ABC's Once Upon a Time. He makes his debut, and only appearance is in the twelfth episode of the first season. He is portrayed by guest star Sage Brocklebank and it is unknown if he has a Storybrooke counterpart.

History

Before the Curse

Gaston, Belle's betrothed, is present in the castle when Sir Maurice seeks the aid of Rumplestiltskin. When Belle agrees to go with him to save their village, Gaston objects.

Later, Gaston appears at the Dark Castle to confront Rumplestiltskin. However, Rumplestiltskin simply turns him into a rose and gives to Belle. Belle ends up cutting the stem of the rose, possibly unknowingly killing Gaston. ("Skin Deep")

Trivia

  • Gaston is based on the antagonist from Disney's Beauty and the Beast. In the classic tale, Gaston is not turned into a rose; rather, the rose is a symbol of the time the Beast has left to undo his curse by finding true love.
  • Like his Disney counterpart, Belle is not interested in Gaston, describing him as shallow.
  • The red rose that Regina gives to the Severe Nurse in the psychiatric ward of the Storybrooke General Hospital is a reference to Rumplestiltskin turning Gaston into a red rose. ("Skin Deep")
