Drink Me are magic potions featured on ABC's Once Upon a Time and Once Upon a Time in Wonderland. They first appear in the first episode of the spin-off.
Drink Me potions are based on the "DRINK ME" bottle from Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and the "Drink Me" bottle from the animated Disney film Alice in Wonderland and the live-action Disney film of the same name.
History
The first Alice steals a piece of magic mushroom from the Caterpillar and runs through the Wonderland maze while guards close in on her. After taking a bite of the mushroom to shrink herself, she uncaps and slides into a bottle. Unexpectedly, Alice meets a genie inside. She takes a "Drink Me" bottle from her satchel and shows it to him, threatening to drink it right then and there and ruin his bottle by growing big if he turns her in. Cyrus reassures her that she is welcome in his home. ("Down the Rabbit Hole")
In the New Enchanted Forest, Henry is drugged by the second Alice and passes out. As he regains consciousness, he finds himself in a nightmarish cavern while a cloaked Alice reappears in front of him. Henry notices a "Drink Me" bottle tied around her neck and realizes who she is. Upon Henry calling her Alice from Wonderland, she expresses irritation over being referred as such since she only went there once before. ("Hyperion Heights")
Following Alice to New Wonderland, Cinderella and Henry enter a cottage, where Cinderella finds the Infinite Maze entrance, which makes Henry realize she is in Wonderland for other reasons. She admits she means to track down her mother Cecelia, whose abandonment broke her father's heart and she wishes to find out her reasons for leaving. She finds a "Drink Me" bottle sitting on the table and downs it, which shrinks her down to the correct size, and rushes into the maze. ("Pretty in Blue")
Trivia
On-Screen Notes
- The bottles and labels of all three Drink Me potions have the same design, and the handwriting on all three labels is the same. ("Down the Rabbit Hole," "Hyperion Heights," "Pretty in Blue")
Fairy Tales and Folklore
- As the Evil Queen leaves Jefferson's cottage, a notecard next to a bottle sitting next to a small pink box alludes directly to Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, where Alice finds a bottle with a paper label saying "DRINK ME," and a small cake inside a glass box. ("Hat Trick")
- The Drink Me potion which the first Alice has, makes the drinker grow in size, as opposed to the novel, where it makes them shrink. ("Down the Rabbit Hole")
- The Drink Me potion which the first Alice shows to Cyrus is dark red, just like the one in one of John Tenniel's colorized illustrations for The Nursery "Alice" (1889) (link to page), a shortened version of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland written by Lewis Carroll for young children. The illustration was originally published in black and white and was created for the first edition of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland (link to page). ("Down the Rabbit Hole")
