Actually, he's not a man at all. He's a god!

Deities, also known as Gods, are a species featured on ABC's Once Upon a Time. They are native to Mount Olympus and Fairy Tale Land, and first appear in the sixth episode of the third season.

Biology

Deities have the appearance of regular humans. Unlike humans, however, deities are immortal, and they are known to be difficult to kill. However, the Olympian Crystal has the power to destroy them by erasing them from existence. ("The Brothers Jones," "Last Rites")

Deities seem to posses magic powers, as both Hades and his brother Zeus are known to have this ability. ("Souls of the Departed" et al., "Our Decay", "Last Rites")

Deities can have children with humans. The offspring of such pairings are known as Demigods, and they are mortal people with strong powers. In addition, Poseidon's daughter Ursula was a Mermaid, indicating that Deities can also interbreed with merpeople. ("Labor of Love," "Poor Unfortunate Soul")

History

Before First Curse

At some point in the timeline, Kronos became father to his two sons, Zeus and Hades. Later, at an unknown point in time, Kronos chooses Zeus to become ruler of Mount Olympus, which is everything Hades ever wanted. This angered Hades and he then stole the Olympian Crystal which only belonged to the ruler of Olympus, and killed his father. Zeus then comes into the room and sees what Hades did. Just as Hades prepares to use the Olympian Crystal on Zeus, he causes Hades' heart to stop beating so only true love's Kiss can reverse it. If Hades succeeds in doing this, he can return to the land of the living as a fully formed person. Additionally, Zeus breaks the Olympian Crystal making it impossible for his brother to fix it without his beating heart. Eventually, Hades ends up becoming the ruler of the Underworld, where he oversees souls of people who have unfinished business.[1] ("The Brothers Jones," "Our Decay," "Last Rites")

At some point in his life, Zeus meets a human woman, who becomes the mother of his son, Hercules. As a demigod, Hercules is tasked to complete the Twelve Labors, in order to ascend to Mount Olympus, where he will be reunited with Zeus and become immortal. ("Labor of Love")

Poseidon, at some point comes to the land of the living and makes the sea his domain. Poseidon at an unknown point in time makes a child with his wife, who is presumably a mermaid, and has a daughter named Ursula whom he names after the sea goddess of old. Also somewhere in between, Ursula's mother dies and she is only left with her father. At a grown age, Ursula steals her father's trident and uses it to turn herself into a cecaelia. ("Poor Unfortunate Soul")

After Second Curse

Ursula, now joined with the queens of darkness and Mr. Gold hunts the heroes down but also is confronted with her father again. He tells her that he misses her and her voice and gives back her singing ability that he once took from her and she forgives the sea god. ("Poor Unfortunate Soul")

After Third Curse

The heroes arrive in the Underworld, where Hades is expecting them. He firstly, commands Cora to get rid of Regina but it backfires and a soul leaves the Underworld which infuriates Hades who sends Cora to eternal punishment as a miller's daughter. Secondly, he warns Emma that he will do a lot worse to Hook than he did to Hercules. He then, realises Rumplestiltskin made a deal with Fendrake the Healer and Fendrake hands over the contract to Hades which explains that it is to give up Mr. Gold's second child. At this time, Belle is pregnant. It is later revealed the lord of the Underworld has a past with Zelena which is later revealed that Hades is in love with her. As this unfolds, the heroes return to the land of the living, but prepared to lash out at Hades as he lied to Emma and Hook. This is all later backfired as he is killed by his own lover. ("Souls of the Departed", "Labor of Love", "Devil's Due", "The Brothers Jones", "Our Decay", "Last Rites")
