David Solomon is an episodic director for ABC's Once Upon a Time and Once Upon a Time in Wonderland.
Biography
Career
Solomon began his television career as an editor in the 1980s. He worked on the series Bay City Blues, Miami Vice, Hill Street Blues, and Hunter. He made his directorial debut with an episode of Matlock in 1989. He was a co-producer on the mystery series Father Dowling Investigates that year. He also became an editor for the Perry Mason television features in 1989. He was made an Associate Producer and then a Co-Producer on later features in the sequence.
In Spring 1997 Solomon joined the crew of Buffy: The Vampire Slayer as a co-producer for the first season. The series was created by Joss Whedon and focused on a young woman with special powers to fight evil. He remained a co-producer and began to direct episodes for the second season in fall 1997. He remained in this role until he was promoted to producer for the fifth season in fall 2000. He was promoted again to Co-Executive Producer for the seventh and final season in fall 2002. He helmed 19 episodes of the series across its run. He also directed an episode of Whedon's short-lived Space Western Firefly in 2002.
After leaving Buffy he directed episodes of Tru Calling and Strong Medicine. He was a Co-Executive Producer and director for Kevin Hill in the 2004 to 2005 season. He directed episodes for the first and second seasons of Las Vegas before becoming a Co-Executive Producer and director for the third season in the 2006 to 2007 season. He remained in this role for the fourth season. He also directed episodes of Burn Notice and Chuck in the 2007 to 2008 season.
In the 2008 to 2009 television development season he directed the pilot episode of the Knight Rider remake. The show was ordered to series but Solomon did not return to the project. Instead he reunited with Whedon as a Co-Executive Producer and director for his new series, Dollhouse. He was promoted to Executive Producer for the second and final season of the show in fall 2009.
He became a Co-Executive Producer and director for the new series Nikita in the 2010 to 2011 season. He did not return for the second season and spent the 2011 to 2012 season as a freelance director. He also directed episodes of Grimm, Fringe, and Body of Proof.
