Before First Curse

Accompanied by her sisters Helga and Gerda, Ingrid goes to Misthaven to find a way to be rid of her ice powers. The Dark One, Rumplestiltskin, agrees to help if the three sisters forfeit their ribbons to him. Once they comply, he gives Ingrid two things; gloves to cancel out her magic as long as she is wearing them, and a urn to trap her in if she ever becomes too dangerous. Sometime after returning home to Arendelle, Ingrid is sitting in the royal garden looking at the gloves when Helga's suitor, the Duke of Weselton, tries to seduce her. When her attempts to rebuff him fail to deter him, she panics, dropping the gloves, and knocks him away with an ice blast. The Duke lies to Helga about Ingrid attacking him after he rejected her feelings, but Helga calls him out for lying and spurns him because of his unsavory behavior. He then threatens to reveal to the kingdom that Ingrid is a monster for having magic. Ingrid retaliates by shooting ice at the Duke, but he uses Helga's body as a shield, causing her to freeze and die instead. After the Duke flees, Gerda is so horrified by Ingrid killing their sister that she traps her in the urn. Before leaving the area, she picks up the fallen gloves. ("The Snow Queen")

Years later, following her sister Anna's return home from Misthaven, Gerda's daughter Elsa is busy preparing a chocolate feast for her while she has her gloves on. Learning from Ingrid that Anna is locked in the dungeons, Elsa, gloves on, angrily confronts her about about wanting to take her powers away, but after the guards leave, she reveals it is just a ruse. Finally realizing their aunt is up to no good, Elsa goes with her sister look for urn. The two plan to trap Ingrid in the urn, but the plan goes awry when Ingrid curses Anna and tries to push Elsa into killing her. Elsa refuses, but Anna imprisons her sister in the urn. ("Smash the Mirror")

After Second Curse

After the urn is pulled from Rumplestiltskin's vault into Storybrooke, Elsa breaks free and pulls off her gloves, using her magic to freeze and pulverize the urn. ("There's No Place Like Home")
