The Chief is a character on ABC's Once Upon a Time. He débuts in the twelfth episode of the first season and is portrayed by co-star Peter Marcin.
The Chief is based on Chief Bromden from the novel, One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest.
History
Chief is a patient at the hospital who often carries a mop. Despite his unassuming appearance, the patient likes to talk. When Regina pays a visit to an incarcerated Belle, he is at the psychiatric ward sweeping the floor. ("Skin Deep," "The Bear and the Bow")
Jefferson drugs Nurse Ratched in order to release Belle. Realizing Chief saw everything, Jefferson gestures for him to remain silent. ("A Land Without Magic")
More than one year later, Chief continues to carry his mop around the psychiatric ward. He watches as Regina brings Zelena in and locks her up in a cell. ("Mother")
One day, Henry spills coffee on the psychiatric ward floor and Nurse Ratched commands Chief to hand her the mop so she can clean the mess. Chief notices Hook taking advantage of the distraction to grab the keys to Zelena's cell but mentions nothing. ("The Dark Swan")
After Chief learns about Emma ripping out a girl's heart, he shares the news with Zelena. ("The Bear and the Bow")
Once again sweeping the floor, Chief wordlessly watches as Zelena storms into the hospital and magicks Nurse Ratched into falling asleep so that she can reach her daughter in the baby incubator room. ("Broken Heart")
One day, as Chief sweeps the floor, Regina, David and Mary Margaret pay a visit to Mr. Hyde. Later on, Chief watches as the Evil Queen frees Hyde from his cell. He remains silent and looks on as the couple walk out and leave the ward. ("The Other Shoe")
As Nurse Ratched leads Regina and Henry to Isaac's cell, they pass Chief in the hallway, where he stands nearby watching them while gripping his mop. ("Mother's Little Helper")
Under the Black Fairy's dark curse, the Chief's role changes very little, however, he now mops the visiting room and is present when Henry visits his mother, Emma. ("The Final Battle Part 1")
Trivia
Production Notes
- After appearing in five episodes and three seasons as an uncredited role, the Chief was credited for the first time in "The Savior,"[1] but ironically, his scenes were cut from the final episode.
Popular Culture
- Chief's look is modeled on the 1975 film adaptation of One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest.
