Charlotte is an allusion to Haydée from The Count of Monte Cristo.
At some point in Charlotte's life, she becomes Snow White's handmaiden, and because of the never-ending war between Snow and the Evil Queen, she also becomes a skilled nurse. One day, she joins Snow White, Prince Charming, and Grumpy, as they search the ruins of a village that the Evil Queen recently attacked. The prince finds a man, burnt but still alive, and Snow White calls Charlotte to aid him. The man, smitten with Charlotte due to her resemblance to his dead fiancé, introduces himself as Edmond, and Snow and Charming allow him to stay at their castle as their new wine steward, unaware that he was hired by the Queen to kill them. During Edmond's first night as steward, the couple invite Charlotte to join them for dinner to say goodbye, since she is leaving the castle to return home and tend to her ill mother. Edmond, under the Queen's command, already poisoned the wine in order to kill Snow and Charming, however, he becomes troubled at the prospect of having to let Charlotte die as well, if he wants to fulfill his mission. After their cups are filled with wine, Charlotte, Snow, and Charming clink their glasses to celebrate, but before they each take a sip, Edmond stops them, telling the trio that a bottle of match is better suited for the occasion. Later, Rumplestiltskin poisons Charlotte and persuades Edmond to bring her to the Land of Untold Stories, where her story will become paused and the poison's effects will be halted as long as she stays in that realm forever. Edmond consents to the deal, and before going into the portal, he picks up Charlotte to take her with him. ("A Bitter Draught")
Charlotte is still residing in the Land of Untold Stories when she, Edmond, and other inhabitants of this land are brought by Mr. Hyde to Storybrooke on a dirigible. Because Charlotte crossed realms, her story becomes unpaused, causing the poison in her body to spread, with her quickly succumbing it. After Charlotte's death, the Evil Queen plants a trap for Regina by placing a magic dampening spell on the girl's cloak. Regina later finds Charlotte, and as the Queen intended, she touches the cloak, causing her magic to be severely weakened. During a swordfight with Edmond, Regina tells him about Charlotte's fate.
