Mary Margaret Blanchard: Are you sure there isn't anyone?
Ruby: Her family was awful to her. And the only person that she has ever loved was her deceased Aunt Em.

Emily Brown,[1] more commonly known as Auntie Em, is a character on ABC's Once Upon a Time. She débuts, with her only appearance, in the eighteenth episode of the fifth season and is portrayed by co-star Gina Stockdale.

Auntie Em is based on Aunt Em from the children's novel The Wonderful Wizard of Oz.

History

Before First Curse

Emily Brown is the aunt of Dorothy Gale. When her niece returns from Oz after her first visit as a young girl, Emily is the only person who believes her, and refuses to let her be admitted into an asylum. However, Emily dies, gifting Dorothy a little dog named Toto before she does. After her death, her soul resides in the Underworld, where she is unable to move on because of her unfinished business. She is running a diner called Auntie's Chicken & Waffles, and creates a direct competition to the Blind Witch's diner. ("Ruby Slippers")

After Third Curse

Years later, Emma, Regina, Snow and Ruby seek out Auntie Em at her diner because they need her help to wake her niece Dorothy from a sleeping curse. Emma quickly prompts Auntie Em to blow a kiss of true love in a bottle so it can be delivered to Dorothy in Oz. As soon as Auntie Em uncaps the bottle, however, her whole body melts into a puddle, because Hades added liquid from the River of Lost Souls into her soup. Using a mason jar, he scoops up Auntie Em's liquid remains into it, declaring to the diner citizens that they will meet the same end if they try to help the heroes. Later, Hades dumps the collected remains of Auntie Em into the River of Lost Souls, to prove he is loyal to Zelena, and to ensure Dorothy remains cursed. ("Ruby Slippers")
