Nova, currently known as Astrid, is a character on ABC's Once Upon a Time. She débuts, with her only appearance, in the fourteenth episode of the first season and is portrayed by guest star Amy Acker.
History
Nova is a fairy whose greatest wish is to become a fairy godmother. She runs an errand for the Blue Fairy, carrying a large bag of fairy dust, and they meet in the clouds. The Blue Fairy warns her to be careful, as fairy dust is part of the magic that runs the world, and thus a year's supply of it is very precious. Though her dream is to become a fairy godmother in the succeeding year, the Blue Fairy wants her to start collecting fairy dust on her own starting next year. Nova is disappointed, but follows orders. That subsequent year, she flies into a mine to turn on a switch and fill her bag with fairy dust. She works herself into a panic when the machine switch jams until a dwarf named Dreamy comes to her aide. She thanks him for his help, but then her bag of fairy dust is scooped up by the assembly line heading for the furnace. Dreamy manages to save the bag in time. Incredibly grateful, Nova calls him her hero. They have a good rapport together, so Nova subtly invites him to accompany her to Firefly Hill that night. However, Dreamy does not understand the hint, and simply wishes her a good time. Nova leaves, albeit a little disheartened.
That night, she goes to Firefly Hill hoping Dreamy will show up as well, which he does. The two proceed to have a discussion about seeing the world. Suddenly, the fireflies light up and she becomes so excited at the sight of them that she kisses him. They fall in love, and agree to meet the next night after Nova has delivered the fairy dust and then sail away together to travel the world. The night they are set to leave, Nova gives Dreamy a spyglass to look at the sailing ship she procured for them to travel the world. Sadly, Dreamy states that they cannot be together. Nova quickly figures out that he spoke to the Blue Fairy and wants to know what she said to him, but Dreamy only replies that they need to stick with their own kind. Nova sobs in tears as he leaves her. ("Dreamy")
During Storybrooke's annual Miner's Day festival, Astrid is one of the nuns helping to set up light decorations around town. As Leroy walks past, she accidentally spills some glitter on him. Quickly, she gets off the ladder and apologizes for the mess. Love-struck, Leroy helps her fix the lights. As they get to know each other, she learns he is a janitor and his dream is to sail the world on his boat. Astrid urges him that anything is possible as long as it's a dream. Later, the head nun, Mother Superior, puts Astrid in charge of using their money to buy helium. However, she ends up spending the entire budget as well as the monthly rent for their landlord. Shocked, Mother Superior demands she fix the mistake as soon as possible. In a depressed stupor, Astrid is approached by Leroy, who promises to help her sell all the nuns' candles to get back the rent she owes. Though Leroy and Mary Margaret try their hardest to attract customers into buying candles, but it ends in failure. Rather than tell Astrid the truth, Leroy says he sold out all of them. Grateful for her new friend's help, Astrid goes to Leroy's docked boat and gives him a baked pie as thanks, however, she discovers the unsold candles hidden under a tarp. Disappointed in his lies, she leaves wordlessly. During the second night of the festival, Leroy deliberately causes a blackout so the townspeople will buy candles as their only light sources. After selling out completely, he delivers the money to Astrid, who is impressed by his efforts. When offered a chance to be his first boat passenger, she happily accepts. ("Dreamy")
Magical Abilities
- Fairy Magic - Use of fairy dust and/or fairies' wands to do magic.
- Conjuration - Ability to conjure objects out of the blue.
Trivia
Etymology
- Fairies are closely related to stars. Nova is named after a type of star characterized by a sudden large increase in brightness before slowly returning to its original state over a few months.[1]
- Interestingly, novas are formed though an explosion from the surface of a white dwarf star in a binary star system.[2] Nova's love interest, Dreamy, is a dwarf. ("Dreamy," "The Outsider")
- In addition, one of the main components of stars is helium,[3] which Astrid accidentally spends the entire budget on for Miner's Day. ("Dreamy")
- Her cursed name, "Astrid," is similar to "astro," a combining form pertaining to stars.
Disney
- Astrid says to Leroy, "Someone once told me, you can do anything as long as you can dream it," a paraphrase of a quote (wrongly) attributed to Walt Disney, "If you can dream it, you can do it." (Walt Disney never actually said this; the phrase was coined by a Disney employee for the Horizons ride at the Epcot theme park at Disney World.)[4] ("Dreamy")
Lost
Set Dressing
- During Miner's Day, the walls of the volunteer center are adorned with illustrations of stars and constellations,[5] and the blackboard is adorned with cutouts of blue stars and white stars,[6] which are nods to Astrid and Mother Superior's counterparts in the Enchanted Forest. ("Dreamy")
