There's plenty of reasons, actually, and very they're very different for every person within the fandom.
@LilacRose2007 Yes, the mother aspect of their relationship is usually fundamental to their ship, but it's not all there is to it.
Regarding the step-grandmother aspect, it's not something that important to the relationship (canon or fanon). After all, Regina was mostly forced into a marriage with a much older man, and she barely even acted as a mother to Snow White (more like a big sister, really). Following that, by the time Snow White had Emma, the Evil Queen/Snow White relationship was not mother/daughter, so it's hard to think in anyway concrete way as Emma's and Regina's relationship as grandmother/granddaughter.
By the time Emma and Regina actually meet, by curse means, they are in the same range, and never share a family bond that the one that would be implied by Regina's unwated marriage to a grandfather that Emma didn't even know.
Had Emma been raised in the Enchanted Forest, knowing who she was all along, and who Regina was, the grandmother/granddaughter aspect of their relationship may have been important, but the way canon is presented, it's never a part of how they see each other, or how they relate to each other.
Look, just, hate on SQ if you like (although honestly, what's the point? Just let people ship whatever they like, and you ship whatever you like), but don't go to the shippers with this argument, because it's not like it was ever explored in canon.
It makes no sense to you (which hey, to each their own, there's beauty in seeing things differently), but there's clearly a huge amount of people who do see the romantic possibilities of the ship. It's totally fine if you don't see it, and it's totally fine to ship whatever you enjoy best.
Personally, I'm probably one of the few that ships both, and who's even on board with Captain Swan Queen.
In favor of SQ, I do have to see that the seer amount of fanworks that the fandom has produces is amazing, and that there's a lot of pretty cool stuff (fanfic, fanart...), exploring the romance of the pairing.
There's a large amount of shippers for both, and they both have great online presence. I think they're both the biggest ships within the fandom.
Honestly, I would love it if there wasn't such a ship war. Like... enjoy what you enjoy and let people be.
Yes, I agree, and I assume it was a choice made by Colin O'Donoghue and the writers.
He IS a different person, after all, and one that has the traumatic experience of being deceived into having sex with Gothel, and then having a child that he didn't expect, and that is trapped in a tower. That's terrible! That should make him more hesitant that original!Hook, who instead goes on to meet Cora and fool Regina, and then keeps his journey of revenge against Rumple until meeting Emma. They do have completely different stories, so they should feel like different versions of the same person.
